Think they have the description wrong Ed, looks more like a Grand Banks trawler yacht (not really a trawler as such, more a cruiser). Great well built quality boats. We have a number of them down here (Aust/NZ) Hold their price well due to the quality build. Should be a nice model to enhance!

'All I see is a nice looking yacht' , yes Ed, some years ago I was in the South of France and heading down towards the harbour, I saw what looked like several really posh super yachts, gleaming white hulls and superstructure. It wasn't until we reached the quay where they were moored I realised that the were big, very modern trawlers.

Doug, I've watched 'Wicked Tuna' as the tuna fishing series is called in this country, but their boats are more like open boats with a big working space and a big cabin/cuddy. I think Ed's boat is bigger with more luxurious accomodation, more like a posh motor cruiser that the rich amateur sports fisherman use to chase species like Barracuda and Spearfish.
Cheers, Nerys ▲

"I think it's what the Americans call a sports fishing boat,"
I agree Nerys๐, also similar to the boats used by the tuna fishers, 'Hochsee Cowboys' they call the TV series over here. I.e. line fishing not trawling, there ain't no trawling gear; no nets, no winches etc etc! Let alone space for all that clobber! Cheers, Doug ๐ ▲

Try about NZ $1000 Doug, I could build a real 10ft dinghy for that!๐. When you can buy such a nice looking model it makes you wonder if all the stress of building one is worthwhile (when you consider the time involved and the materials cost.)๐ That's why all the young guys/girls buy RTF/sail planes, boats etc - fun without much effort๐ No different to buying a house car, boat, plane etc I suppose.

Hi Doug,- to add to your bit. -Most chargers these days will cut off automatically if there is an imbalance/overcharge/wrong cell count selected etc but a plug in temp sensor (if your charger accepts one) is a good option to make use of. One major danger for LiPos lying around on your building table, which probably no one thinks about, is sharp modelling knives or the like. If you happen to puncture a LiPo, it's all on,๐ฎ (and by the way, no extinguisher will put them out, as it is a chemical reaction which will keep going till it runs out of fuel๐ฅโก) best to remove batteries to a safe place when working, and only bring them to the bench when necessary. Best to charge them near a window or door so if anything does happen, you can quickly deposit them on the lawn, concrete'- (some non flammable area) etc to do their thing.
A steel bucket is also a handy thing to keep near to drop a burning LiPo in, while you carry it outside (all the while filling your house with horrible smelling smoke) along with sturdy leather gloves to grab the leads on the offending battery HOT HOT HOT (I keep side cutters handy as well). Above all, as with all small fires, do not panic!. Panic can turn small fires into big fires! I have used LiPos for 10 yrs and never had a problem. I have 40 LiPos at present (largest 5s 45c) and a number are over 6 yrs old, (some from 2011 which I'm still using) As you and others have mentioned, charging at a low rate makes the batteries last longer, and generates no heat. I always charge at 1.5A which I have found to be a happy medium,- takes a while but pretty safe. Always return batteries to 'storage voltage if not using for a few days/weeks. I always balance charge, and set the charger to view the cell volts, that way I can see exactly what is happening (if one is lagging/ overcharging etc) After charging,-even if the charger is showing all cells balanced (within .3v) I put them on my balancer and let them balance again. Loses a bit of voltage but double checks they are properly balanced. The only way I have been able to get a LiPo going, is to drive a nail or a steel garden rake through one. They are actually quite forgiving if you follow the right Procedures. For my smaller batteries,(2/3/4s) I use a charger which charges one cell at a time, (pic) and will never overcharge a cell. If a cell has a problem it will stop. It can also rejuvenate over-discharged batteries to a reasonable extent. I have 2 10yr old 2s 1800 Mah batteries which are completely knackered which I use for testing, and it continues to charge them to their max, (which is only about 75%) before starting to cut out. No problems what so-ever! You don't really need to stand and watch them, just be handy, be prepared, and have a plan in case of a problem. Don't be scared, be careful! If you are worried about LiPos, don't fly in a Dream liner, they have a sack full of LiPos in each wing! JB ▲

Mike,
"the point of my comment was FOLLOW THE RULES" I fully appreciated that Mike and didn't take issue with it. On the contrary. What did raise my eyebrows was the comment that followed- "A chap I know, last year lost his garage with 30 + models in it." Without any qualification whatsoever; i.e. we don't know how he treated or maltreated his batteries. If you had simply added something like "because he didn't follow the rules" at the end of that comment all would have been well. It's also possible he had bought a defective battery which overheated. I had one once, my only LiPo failure which was half DOA, and it was promptly deposited in the garden, still in it's fire-bag, to cool off. The temperature sensor attached to my charger had warned me before things got critical. I have promoted 'the rules' on many occasions. This discussion comes around with almost monotonous regularity! I do follow the rules; have several fire-bags and store my LiPos separately in a steel cabinet with a huge bag of fire suppression granulate and a powder fire extinguisher close at hand. Like insurance policies; since bought never needed! Which reminds me; extinguisher needs re-certifying shortly - important for the insurance๐ I wish you always at least a finger of water under the keels of your masterful creations, and may your batteries (whatever type) never leave you up the creek without a volt๐ค Cheers, Doug ๐ ▲

Hi JB,
Thanks, so much for the information. It's very informative! I'm still how ever very worried and these Lipo's! I could get everything I need to use and charge a Lipo battery! But, I'm so scared of the things going critical! I've gone ahead and Ordered some Nimh batteries! These I trust won't become critical! Call me a scaredy cat! I just can't see myself using Lipo's! In fact I had ordered 2 more Lipo's. And don't know what I will do with them! I may just discharge them and just toss them out! This is how worried I am about them! After, I receive the other 2 Lipo's If you want! I'll post them to you! You pay the post! LOL! They are 7.4 2800 Mah 25C 2S! Question? Would this small Lipo also pose a threat! If I don't charge it correctly? I went so far as to read what type of fire extinguisher I would need! Until I saw it would cost $995.00! I'm not paying almost $ 1000.00 for an extinguisher! Cheers, Ed ▲

Hi Ed, if you are wanting a charger, then these are probably the most commonly used chargers around. They have ben around for years and are pretty reliable. This bundle shown has everything you should need for charging. This is a genuine Sky RC B6 as they have the hologram sticker on the back with a hidden code you can check. There are many knock-offs around,-especially of these but they usually don't have Sky RC on them and don't have the security sticker.
Sky RC stuff is generally very reliable, I have a model I bought 12 yrs ago which still works fine, as well as a GT Power A6 (which is a Sky RC in disguise) which works well, and also a knock off B6 which use for charging NiMH batteries in my cheap transmitters and shavers, (I'd only use that for LiPos with very close supervision) Once you get past the initial worries about LiPos you'll be fine. If you buy a charger, get used to the settings by using NiMH batteries which are much safer to play with. Chargers are pretty basic really, Just pick the type of battery, the number of cells, balance charge (or storage if you aren't going to use them for a while)-- don't worry about plain charging or other charging options yet--- charging rate and charging time. Don't try and charge mostly full batteries, run them down normally in the boat then start charging again. Start with everything on lower settings and work your way up to full charging. Just have to be careful of your settings (most good chargers won't let you make a mistake without beeping at you,- eg the number of cells you input don't match the battery hooked up, you've input the wrong battery, haven't plugged something in etc) pretty failsafe really. Just check double check and triple check before starting. (bit like measuring twice and cutting once๐) Good idea just to read lots on line about LiPo charging, -you tube vids etc as well. If it's a nice day,- charge outside on the concrete๐. Buy yourself a decent battery checker (the ones with the watt meter/balancer/cell checkers are by far the most useful) for fine balancing your LiPos after charging and checking cell V. (also useful for checking loads on your motors-re prop size etc to make sure you aren't overloading your motors.) JB ▲

Yes, sure it is a question of what went wrong. But the owner reckoned it was a faulty battery that set off a chain reaction.
My advice is follow the instructions VERY Caarefully and follow them to the word. Some chargers out there are of dubious quality! In South Africa we have to watch Chinese Imports and you get what you pay for I never leave batteries on charge un attended ▲

I agree Peter๐
Why do people continue to publish these unsubstantiated horror stories about LiPos? The Boeing and Samsung disasters are well behind us, and how many folks happily use their dumbphones and Slaptops / Notebooks / Tablets without a moments thought about the Lithium battery within? Cheers, Doug ๐ ▲

Hi Ed.
I have about 20 LiPo batteries and have never had an issue with them. I was nervous at the beginning but if the above written precautions are taken, they are quite safe. The charger must have a balance charge system to ensure that all of the cells charge at the same rate and the voltage is balanced throughout the charge. My charger has a readout whilst charging which displays the charge amperage and the voltage of each cell at all times. It stops automatically on completion. Never leave a charging battery unattended and get into the habit of not only keeping the battery in a fire proof bag during storage but also whilst charging. I, like Doug, charge my batteries generally at a maximum amperage of 1 to 1,4 amps. This does help them last longer. When you are not going to use the battery for a while, the charger must be set for a storage charge which will either charge or discharge the battery to the storage voltage. If this is done, I can say with experience that they will hold this for a long time. Just a note, my charger can give out 5 amps but I don`t want to hear "frying tonight". I keep all of my batteries in individual fire proof bags and then inside sturdy ex army ammunition boxes. It is best to remove some of the air tight seal just in case as a fire could cause a lot of internal pressure. In case of an extremely rare incident, only gas and smoke will come out. A battery alarm whilst in use is also a must. If the voltage drops too low, no more battery. Take all of the precautions and these are very safe. I would advise you not to use that charger you showed me though. It might be ok but I would not use it. Buy a good balance charger capable of at least to S6 (6 cell) batteries. Must have storage charging and discharging also. Peter. ▲

Search You Tube there is some good advice there from the hobby shops that sell these!
Call me old fashioned but I still use SLA's or NiMh Batteries Seen a 7000GBP Jet go up in flames possibly due to not understanding Lipo Batteries ▲

Mike,
"A chap I know, last year lost his garage with 30 + models in it." Whilst I very much admire your evident skills in other areas, I really don't think it helps anyone, least of all newcomers to LiPo batteries, to post such comments. We have no idea of the circumstances or how this guy had treated or was charging his batteries, or what precautions he had taken - or not! I can only endorse Pete's comments; I have several LiPos, I follow the rules (posted here many times), and have never had anything near a fire, not even overheating. My charger, Graupner Polaron, has thermocouples I can attach to the batteries to cut off the charger if a battery temperature exceeds a pre-settable limit. The cut-off has never yet activated. I charge at 1 Amp MAX! Cheers, Doug ๐ ▲

Basically very sound advice Pete๐
Just one thing! Why " It needs to charge at at least 2 amps"? To prolong the lives of my batteries, and minimise heat generation during charging, I never charge at more than 1 Amp. Never mind what the label says about Fast charging, 10C or whatever. Cheers, Doug ๐ ▲

I was a newby once Ed, but I was lucky that I could ask a load of questions at our boat club, to people who were really into brushless motors and lipo batteries. What you need to look for in a new charger is, to be able to charge lipos of :
One cell 3.7v Two cell 7.4v three cell 11.1 Four cell 14.8v I wouldn't think you need to go up to 5 cell . It needs to charge at at least 2 amps, and also have a function to put a store charge in, that's a voltage that the cell requires to keep it safe when asleep! when you need to store it, you will also need a low voltage buzzer alarm, not expensive, you plug it into your balance plug ( the white plug on your battery) when you sail, the when the battery becomes close to it's dead voltage, it buzzes and you bring your boat safely back, Have a look on utube for lipo information, you will find it interesting, and you will pick it up quickly, I did.๐ Cheers, Pete ▲

Hi Pete,
Thanks, for the vote of confidence! It's just the yacht came with a Lipo battery and no instruction! So, I'm just a bit nervous about the thing! Now I'm going to have to get a new charger! The Battery did come with it's own charger! But, I've been told to get a better charger! Problem is I haven't a clue as to which one to order! So, for now as to this Lipo. I have it in my bath tub in a pot! Boy, can you tell I'm a newby...........! LOL On Lipo's! ▲

Hi Ed, I will give you my opinion on lipo charging. I have had lipo's for the past six years, I bought a good charger, as I have various cell batteries, and I have NEVER had a problem with any lipo charging, I too was suspicious and nervous with lipo's at the beginning, but I was told to just abide by the rules of charging, and it works, just don't overcharge๐
Cheers, Pete ▲

What camera are you using, and what settings? The exposure seems OK but there looks like a bit of camera shake and/or out of focus. Both can possibly be overcome without needing a new camera, 'cos they ain't cheap.
