Pity I had hoped the details would have provided the answer. I will keep looking and asking and who knows someone somewhere may have the required info.

I have searched every way but loose. There are few, if any photos of a 250 available. Plenty of AAJ winch photos, but most are not the 250. AAJ made a hugh number of winches during the war, including the beaching winches stern mounted on LST's. What I need to most, though, are actual dimensions. Short of actually measuring one up, if I could find one, I am still searching for thta elisive manual.Even the canadian company that bought AAJ claims not to have one. Somewhere...maybe over the rainbow.....

That winch seems more like what I have fitted to many of my tugs. We are fortunate to have some excellent manufacturers in the UK and
https://www.mobilemarinemodels.com/winch-115-c.asp
offer winches in various sizes for Tugs. I'm sure you have similar suppliers in the USA that would not cost as much postage wise.
If you are considering making your own I suggest you Google "Almon A. Johnson 250 series automatic towing machine" as that shows actual pics and drawings.
The winch you posted a pic of looks like a trawler winch as I made one very similar for my model of the Le Vendeen at 1:10 scale still under construction.
Hopefully someone will recognise your winches and identify the supplier
Cheers

You are correct about the V-4's being diesel powered. They were interesting and very powerful, but they owe their good looks to the Dutch. The US maritime commission took the lines off the HMS Zwarte Zee, formerly the Dutch tug Zwarte Zee which escaped to England in 39'. The Commission modifed the lines and produced the V-4's.
The wich in the oicture is one I installed as the tow winch, probably 15 years ago. It is not coreect, but it looked good. The V-4's actually carried, as I have learned in the last few year, an Almon A. Johnson 250 series automatic towing machine. Single drum carrying 2000 feet of 2" cable, or there abouts. It was a big machine. I have draws of a 225 series which carried slightly less cable and it too is a big machine. I was hoping not to have to build one, but I think it may be my project for the winter because there is nowhere to go and less to do.
I would still like to try to find who made the winch I posted pictures of, but it may be lost in time.

I wasn't familiar with a V-4-MA-1 tug so looked it up

Very interesting and nostalgic tug. I assume it is diesel powered as the winch you have posted has no steam pipes attached.
Many UK tugs have a winch at the bow as well as a towing winch under the tow hook. It would help to know which one you wish to acquire. Do you have a diagram of the type fitted?
There are several suppliers of winches and a google search will identify, but I have not seen any that exactly match your photo.
Good hunting
