The Schooners arrived in Mahone Bay

What a magnificent sight these schooners make. How lucky you are to be actually seeing them.

Cheers, Nerys

Hope these photos are able to open

You can see many more on Facebook, look for Nova Scotia Schooner Association postings.

These here are not my photos but copied from FB posted photos. By the time the schooners began sailing we were camping in New Brunswick at Fundy National Park.

The Schooners arrived in Mahone Bay

Bruce Halliday, the Nova Scotia Schooner Association Commodore, patiently answered my questions and it was interesting to hear that the jib is a self tacking setup as is the main and fore on some of the vessels.

I believe Nyers you said the barges use a similar arrangement using a horse?

Once the sail is set to the wind conditions the schooner pilots the vessel on the course desired. He said he can sail it on his own but an optimum of four person crew is best.

Seeing these pics, I look forward to seeing some of the schooners sailing, which I am sure you will do your best to provide us with. This is a gathering of traditional sail well worth archiving.

cheers,
Nerys

There were several tied up
along the wharf this evening and the Commodore took my grandson for a tour below deck of his vessel
