I have just visited the Lowestoft Maritime Museum and would recommend it to all marine modelers and indeed, anyone interested in life in East Anglia.
The museum is open 10 - 5 from May to October and is a mere ยฃ2 entrance. The address is NR32 1XG and there is plenty of parking.
This is a truly wonderful museum which of course has particular interest to all marine modelers. Lowestoft was a major fishing port and all types of fishing craft from early sailing vessels to modern trawlers are on show in model form. In addition there are models of all types of craft including war time, oil and gas drilling, lifeboats and hovercraft.
Christopher Cockerell was a local man who started life as a marine designer but became a prolific inventor, his most famous invention being the hovercraft. His workshop equipment and tools are displayed along with photographs, descriptions and models. This section could be the subject of a museum in its own right.
I spent two and a half hours there and felt as though I had only skimmed the surface. The highlight for me were the dozens of model boats and ships.
The email address is admin@lowestoftmaritimemuseum.co.uk. Sadly there is no website.
Funfact - this is the easternmost maritime museum in the UK. ๐
