I think that it was proposed to get new ferry boats but everyone wanted the steamboats working and that is what happened. Maybe Doug can put me right if my memory has failed me or I have the wrong lake.
I have travelled at over 30 kph on that lake, overtaking an astonished motor boat! We were in my (now) daughter in law's 21 foot catamaran. Son was on the helm and the wind had got up a lot. It was on the return journey the bows had dipped 300mms lower in the water due to wind pressure on the sails. Manoeuvering was out of the question, but the lake was 7 miles long and the boat house was directly ahead.
You just sat in the howling wind and hoped for the best! We made it safely but he got a severe telling off from the 'owner'! However his street cred went very high in the club for not capsizing!
On calmer days I used my weight usefully out on the trapeze, got some photos somewhere.

You see things the way I do. Also, the personal relationship with an object, no matter what kind, has turned into a throwaway society. To the chagrin of all . .
I'm sure we're all in agreement here. 😔😔😔😔
As crazy as it sounds, our Swiss lakes are full of sunken ships! Let's take Lake Constance with the steamer Säntis, which was sunk in 1933 instead of being dismantled because it was unfit to sail. Our grandfathers weren't saints either . . .

I dislike the modern shapes of yachts, the design is I am sure efficicient and the maintenance minimal but they all look the same! Even worse are the power boats which look like big plastic bath toys!
I am getting old and grumpy with my ideas but once we had designers without computers and they turned out some beautiful yachts and boats.
The numbers were low as was the production but they were personal and featured things the owner wanted. There was a personal relationship between the owner and the builder and yard staff.
Things are changing and although I am willing to observe and adapt I do not have to partake. So I am choosy in what I like and over the years it is people first, then understanding and then "model yachts"! After all what else matters?
Next time you visit a marina take a look at the waterlines of the boats, a clean waterline so often shows a well loved and used boat.
Regards to all

When my son from near St Raphael / Frejus above St Tropez / France sent me this picture,
I would have liked to know how this ship's life ended.
How careless is mankind?
A shake of the head on my part.
