For those who appreciate the pre-dreadnought era as navies transitioned from sail to steam, there are several projects underway on opposite sides of the pond - the Pacific, in this case - that should be of interest.
Cactus RC, who I have cooperated with to develop the Juanita & Major sternwheeler kits, is currently working on a 1/48 scale kit of the Chinese Zhiyuan (CHIH YUAN) built in 1887 by Armstrong & Mitchel. Zhiyuan was sunk in the Battle of the Yalu River in 1894 by IJN Yoshino, also of the same yard.
Kit will come with 3DP hull, ABS, brass, wood deck, photo etch & resin parts plus running gear with an expected release mid-year. With an overall build length of 5', will make a nice looking model on the water. He plans to offer both a full kit with PETG hull as well offer STL files w/detail kit to finish to save on S&H. Will post more details as he progresses on this project.
Pat Matthews who is well known in the modeling community, is in the midst of drafting plans for a USN Yorktown class gunboat which saw service in the Pacific. Three ships of this class were built & served from 1889-1919.
Given his past work, Pat be posting his work for open source use as he for starts his future build.
