HI Folks
Between other hobbies and household duties the repaint is now done and the stand made and painted as well .

Grey and white primers worked ok but I used tile red for the bottom and a satin black for the upper hull .
Apart from the decals , rear steps , mast , and life rings it is a bit bare .

The weather is foul at the moment and I hope to get down the lagoon in the next couple of months to re float and run the boat .
until then here is a boat out of water

thanks for the help and tips

regards emma

Whatever you use do try a small hidden area first or you may be back to square one.
Plenty of time until Easter, maybe.

HI Dave

I am thinking of using brush paints for the hull Red and black , A friend lives in the marina and might be able to get some real antI foul red paint 😁
I think that is spirit based , I can find some black satin spirit based leaving only humbrol 64 for the grey if I can get some . The white roof from a rattle can worked ok .

I hope to finish it for easter 2015 is my " dream " but it has been in the water and does look the part . I have some of the finishing touches but this will be a working boat . Not a show boat defininately NOT a SLOW boat 😉
I have a searchlamp , mast , steps and a few other things including the decals to "look the part " I still have the fibre galss hull and upper wood kit for the other one that I have not started yet and going the way I am it might be an unfinished project ( unstarted even )

I am spend too much time on my other hobbies , we build full size recumbent tadpole trikes ( atomic zombie forum ) as well as fly model aircraft ( RCGroups )

HI Emma
There are different types of paint in rattle cans. Sounds like you have used a cellulose version which will react with any other type.
Barrier cream should be available from any good paint supplier and will enable you to restore the hull.
For future reference you should ask for Acrylic paint as this will not normally react with previous paints. Good idea to try a small spray on a hidden area and allow to fully dry (24/48 hrs) to make sure there is no reaction or softening.
Enamel will work OK but you will need a dust free area and in colder weather it may take some time to fully dry.
Bet you can't wait to get this model finished and on the water. Good painting 😀

HI Shaun

That is not going to happen 😭 , I will repair the "festers" 😑 with a little P38 and try and get some barrier coat , if it is still available . 😯

Other than that its going to be spirit based household type paint for the red and black ,

The boat is too old to make a 100% repaint job and I suspect a lot of gremlins might be lurking under the paintwork that might bite back if disturbed .

Sometimes I think " let sleeping dogs lie " the speed I seem to be getting on with this it wont be done by next year 😯

HI Emma,

Had a few issues with paint myself and ended up biting the bullet and starting again. Rubbed it down with wet and dry and then applied several coats of Halfords grey primer (£7-49p for a reasonable sized tin) letting it dry between coats and rubbing it down with progressively finer wet and dry. Used the same Halfords red and black paint as top coats, am quite pleased with the resulting finish but it was long winded.

HI Folks

I have tried to use the auto paints the white for the roofs are ok but the black and red both react> 😟 , either I need to get some barrier coat or use enamel to refinish the hull

HI Emma

If you have a smooth paint surface just key the old paint with a scouring pad, acrylic will not usually react with other paints, something I forgot to mention, get some tac rags, they are slightly sticky cleaning cloths for after sanding and before paint, the remove large amounts of dust before you clean down with panel wash to get the area completely clean

Thanks Mark

there is one local will take a look , I can only assume ( make an ass u me ) that the paint will take an acrylic over the finish that is already on the boat , there is red under the grey so l hope it is an acrylic base paint already , this is the problem with a second hand boat that has seen many years of service before me , I was wondering if I can get a auto barrier paint before I go and " muck " it up , l need to fill the first cabin roof as I removed it to refit the windows . but I can use a finger of body filler for that .

HI Emma

Just had a look on Eurocarparts website, they have Hycote acrylic on offer at the moment, they also do click and collect, see if you have a euro near you.

HI Dave

Wow the price has shot up, best I found was £3.50, there were a lot of commercial finishing paints at about 4 quid, these would be at least as good, possible deals for multiple cans???

Ring them and ask for the colours you want, I got a 12 can deal with different colours with a discount on top

Apologies Emma for poor information,

HI Mark
Have you bought Simonize acrylics on e-bay recently? The best price I can find is £4 . I use a local supplier as I once had a problem with out of date old stock bought from a car boot.

HI Emma

Give the hull and all other areas a good sanding to get it smooth, if its fairly smooth already you can use scouring pads to rough the area.

Spray with Grey acrylic primer, just a light coat, this will highlight any highs and lows in the finished area, sand with 1200 wet and dry used wet with a few drops of washing up liquid in it.

Spray again lightly and sand back.

You should now have a nice smooth hull to apply your top coats of colour. I assume Black with Red lower hull.

Spray the red first overlapping onto the black area, mask the red and a light spray of clear over the masking tape line red to black, to stop any creep
under the tape edge. Spray the black, final coat peel the masking away while the paint is still tacky stopping any splitting as the tape pulls away.

Paint supplies.

I use Simonize acrylics, of ebay, £3.00 per tin, also available from Eurocarparts. Halfords is another supplier but is twice the price. if you have a company near you that supply the car refinishing trade you can get your supplies from them.

As a guide this should get you started, any probe or worries let me know.
