another thing to consider is customer support. In my experience there is almost no support from Spectrum, I have stopped using them and usually use Flysky and HobbyWing. Just my experience. Len

All my models are scratch built. I put far too effort into my boats to "cheap out" on the electronics. I prefer Mtronics speed controls and Spektrum radios. I think the prices are not unreasonable. You will forget how much money you saved if your model doesn't perform well

Can't say that I have had many serious problems with the "Chinese junk". In the past few years their electronics has not been that bad, probably because there is less human involvement in making the products.
Computer design, automated assembly, etc is the likely reason. However, one is more likely to find overrated items, like "rated at 10 amps" when it will ony handle 5 amps.
I found some really miniature esc's that were inexpensive at a good price.
For model boats I recommend sticking to popular brands that will meet your expectations.
I had an Mtronics esc that would turn a motor at about 20 rpm while my Hobbywing will get down to about 40 rpm but less than 1/2 the cost of the Mtronics.

Yes I know what you are saying for boat ESC's I don't think you can beat Mtronik's but they tend to be quite expensive but I guess it like you say when you have put large amounts of time and expense why spoil the product for an halfpenny of tar !
My thoughts other may vary - also with ESC's you need to look at what they give you - if you have a large model you may want a unit that will immediately go full speed astern if you want it too to avoid an emergency and hence damage to your prized or indeed another persons model

They are pretty much all Chinese so you don't have a lot of choice in where they are made.

But the reputable makes are good. My mantra with buying all things is to try and get something in the middle price range where you should get better quality but still good value.

I take the view that my builds have taken a lot of time and money and so I'm not going to risk using cheap electronics.

Some folks use them without problem but with say the ESCs you have to take the max amp etc. with a pinch of salt.
