Nick,
Re "down which an inebriated Jack was hurled into the welcoming arms of the crushers... "
Which leads to the question-
"What's the difference between a grinder and a crusher?"😮🙈

Pat, Re-
"School of Dancing in Guz or Pompy ? "
Neither. It was in Southsea near Portsmouth AKA Pompey😉

Guz or Guzz is the nickname for HMNB Plymouth / Devonport.
Originally HM Dockyard, Plymouth, then HM Dockyard, Devonport. Or 'The Yard', which led to the nickname derived from from the Hindi word for a yard (36 inches), "guz", (also spelled "guzz", at the time) which entered the Oxford English Dictionary and Royal Navy usage in the late 19th century, as sailors used to regularly abbreviate "The Dockyard" to simply "The Yard", leading to the slang use of the Hindi word for the unit of measurement of the same name.

Doug, you truly are a font of naval trivia! There was also an SOD in Torpoint, more commonly known as HMS Raleigh. There was also one in Guz called The Paramount, accessed by a long flight of stairs, down which an inebeiated Jack was hurled into the welcoming arms of the crushers...

"Jenny's Side Party was a group of women in Hong Kong, led by Jenny (Mrs. Ng Muk Kah), who provided various services to ships of the British, Commonwealth, and American navies visiting the port. They were known for their ship husbandry work, including cleaning, painting, and general maintenance, as well as providing other services (🙈🙉🙊) like laundry and mending. Jenny's Side Party was a well-known and beloved fixture in Hong Kong for decades, with many sailors remembering them fondly.
Here's a more detailed look at Jenny's Side Party:

Services:
The women of Jenny's Side Party would board ships upon arrival in Hong Kong and offer their services to the crew. This included chipping rust, repainting the ships, cleaning, laundry, and mending.

Popularity:
They were highly sought after, with ships often requesting their services. Jenny's Side Party was particularly known for their thoroughness and attention to detail. "

2. The term "Royal Navy School of Dancing" refers to a former nightclub in Portsmouth called Joanna's, which was popular with Royal Navy personnel. It was also known for dance lessons, particularly for naval officers, offered by instructors like Wilhelmine Ganz in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Go for a night out at Joanna's. It was the best-known nightclub in Southsea and was dubbed the 'Royal Naval School of Dancing'.

(Dad was in the RAF for 38 years; from Airman to Flight Lieutenant.😉)

I meant the Soren Larsen, I went aboard every one of them that allowed visitors. Got the full tour of the Mir, was there with cadets so was in full regalia. The Russians were paticularly keen to show off their sewage processing plant. You could smell it long before you got there!

Hi Pat.

Soren Larsen?

Soren Larsen is a 42.31 m / 138′10″ luxury sailing yacht. She was built by Larsen S in 1949. With a beam of 7.68 m The sailing yacht can accommodate 22 guests in cabins and an exterior design by Soren Larsen & Sonners Skibsvaerft.

Charlotte Rhodes?

Three-masted topsail schooner 'SS Charlotte Rhodes' on the River Dart, August 1972. The vessel was used in the famous 1970's BBC TV series 'Onedin Line', which I was a great fan of. Unfortunately, the ship caught fire (suspected arson) and was destroyed in Amsterdam in 1979. Scanned print taken with a Kowa SET.

I didn't remember seeing them in my books or in person. The Internet has solved it for all of us once again.
