Just for completeness a sextant can be used for the following as well - a vertical sextant site ie if you know how high an object such as a lighthouse and you know the bearing of the object then you can a. Use mathematics or tabled to work out how far you are from the object (simple Pythagoras therum)

Secondly if you have two or three fixed objects on shore and you know the distance between then if measure the angle and plot it you can then deduce your position - this is called a horizontal sextant angle.

I really like the questions you ask about navigation. I remember a lot about surveying and navigation in general. My problem is the specific terms and words.

Let's try the second part.

1. I could tell you the latitude by measuring the angle between the sun or a star and the horizon.

2. From the internet. Index error refers to the difference between the actual angle measured by a sextant and the angle indicated by the instrument's arc and micrometer. This is a calibration error that must be accounted for to ensure accurate measurements.

3. Bearings can be taken of a specific point (i.e., a known object) at two or more different times, with the vessel moving between each bearing. By plotting the bearings and accounting for the vessel's motion, a correction can be obtained.

4. Internet for the correct English phrase, but I had already heard and read about it. Southampton is subject to a phenomenon known as "double tide" due to its unique geography. This results in a complex tidal pattern with two high and two low tide phases, each with different heights.

5. Elementary school notion.
During neap tides, the sun and moon are aligned at a 90-degree angle, thus "subtracting" their gravitational forces. The tidal range is smaller.(Quarter moon).
During spring tides, however, the sun and moon are aligned so that their gravitational forces are added together. Maximum range.(Full moon or new moon).

BTW Pat,
I think you drew the bow a bit too far this time, which is why no one took part.
Two part (or 3 at a pinch) questions are OK. But 13 ....!🤔
You put two weeks worth of questions into one day🤕
Don't over do it or it's not fun anymore.
Cheers, Doug😎

Pat,
'Baggywrinkles' are of course Norah Batty's wrinkly stockings, which used to drive old Compo into ecstasy 😁

I will put the sources (web links) at the end of the text.

A Spider Band is a type of metal band or ring that is used to secure multiple ropes or stays to a mast or spar on a sailing vessel.

In sailing, Lifts refer to ropes or wires that support the boom or yard of a sail, helping to control its position and angle.

Runners are ropes or tackles used to control the position of a boom or yard on a sailing vessel. They can be used to adjust the sail's angle or to secure the boom in place.

A Cross Jack is a type of sail set on the lower yard of a mizzen mast on a sailing vessel. It's a square sail that helps to stabilize the ship and improve its maneuverability.

Baggywrinkle is a type of protective covering or wrapping used on sailing vessels to prevent chafing or damage to sails or rigging from masts, booms, or other spars. It's typically made from old rope or canvas.

In sailing, the Truck refers to a wooden or metal cap or block at the top of a mast, often used to secure the topmast or to support the rigging.

A Dolphin Striker is a spar or boom that extends downward from the bowsprit of a sailing vessel. It helps to support the bowsprit and the jib sails, and can also be used to secure additional sails or rigging.

A Bob Chain, is a type of chain used for anchoring or mooring a vessel. However, in some contexts, a bob chain might refer to a specific type of chain or tackle used for a particular purpose on a sailing vessel.

Pat, I have the answers, but I found them online, so it doesn't count.
I'll have to refrain.
Unfortunately, I don't know any English nautical terms, only Italian ones.
