I have both Dumas Shovel noses, non-running, but both restored after our house fire back in 2009. The Wahoo was nitro powered, with flex shaft and she was fast. But after a few runs my dad and his buddies ran it into a rock at a local beach tidal backwater! The great Mira Slovak would have been furious! It took him months to fix it. LOL!
So I started on the smaller (1/10th) Hawaii Kai, then the fire happened and burned both boats black, melted down, and weakened. I lost just about everything in that fire, my planes, Chris Crafts, unbuilt kits, all classics today Royal, Top-Flights, Dumas, Berkeley kits, uggh. In the clean-up my dad tossed them into a box and I happily rediscovered both in my grandfather's garage after my dad passed away. Thanks Dad!!!!
They were filled with mouse crap and were partially eaten. But, I got to work and still have them as shelf queens. If I was really brave I'd go electric with the Kai and give her a go. But, my youngest daughter has it ear-marked for her home and the possibility of me trashing it is unacceptable to her.
I will ask my r/c boat maven at DaveyBoyzToyz if he has either left laying about. I've found that the 1/10th kit s a bit easier to come by on ebay, but since Dumas went belly up the prices have exploded as you know. More to follow!
PS: You have so much experience I feel like a rookie so you'll no problem going full bore electric. I have started to electrify my 1/8th Pay and Pak with a Traxxas Spartan chassis!
He had other boats that clocked over 80 mph and one that was clocked at over 100 mph. I still have the motors he ran in these boats but unfortunately the boats have long since gone to the great model show in the sky.
I have piloted all of these boats from time to time.
I recently bought a Dumas Miss Circus Circus on EBay but it has arrived badly damaged and I have got a refund. It did not have cowling and when I asked on this site someone lent me a full set of drawings.
You kindly sent me some excellent pictures.
I found that the cowl for this boat is available in the states but costs $180 plus shipping to the UK
I am in two minds whether to build a new one or find plans for a 1/10 or smaller shovel nose as that is what I really want. Thriftway Too would be my dream.
A Traxxas Spartan or Pro Boat Sonicwake set-up would work. A water cooled aluminum jacketed Brushless motor, water cooled ESC, a high torque servo, and two 3 cell lipos would push a hydro around quite well. Dual inlet rudder and trim tabs will help as well. And then there’s always a razor sharp, perfectly balanced brass prop. Def don’t need nitro. Also there are aftermarket performance parts companies that offer upgrades to both Traxxas and Pro Boat racing boats. The only downfall for me with electric speed is excessive heat and getting a phd to fully comprehend the science of lipo batteries. Here’s a vid of some “light” running with my Spartan just to get a hang of the transmitter response. I will open it up in the next week or two.
You might want to consider buying a used brushless electric boat like ones listed above to get a feel for this sort of 50 mph+ running. 😉
My goodness, you took the words right out of my mouth!!
I've been wondering about that for quite some time.
Today's brushless motors and LiPo batteries are so powerful that an electric setup seems like a very realistic option.
Excellent question, Ed. I'm looking forward to hearing what those with first-hand experience recommend.
