So Robert, does that mean that you live above a pound shop or that you have a load of tubes stored under your bench 😁 😁

HI the sealer is called G4 and can be obtained from garden centres selling ponds, and from glass fiber suppliers.

I would try on a test piece of your chosen planking as it will highlight any glue on the surface.

An alternative is any good clear varnish for use outside or as Alan says sanding sealer. The result will be similar and glue stains will not be highlighted.

The sealer is excellent on hulls where you want to achieve a high finish and can be overpainted or sprayed with the colour of your choice.

I have used the pound shop sealer on my sun deck. As I have a store underneath, worked very well. Except 2 of the tubes where slightly grey in colour. Beware when they got wet they turned to chalk, and washed away. So if you get grey looking tubes don't use them.

I used PVA and carbon powder and made a paste. When dry, I "sanded" with a brass rotary brush. I finished with some varnish primer from a chandler. The effect was quite good as the planks became slightly stained so looked a bit dirty.
Good luck

You should be able to get pond sealer from a garden centre that deals with ponds and fish.
Or just use sanding sealer.
I think I would be tempted to lay a few planks on some scrap wood and try the method out first.

Or after sealing planks, mix some black paint powder with P38 filler and fill the gaps with this, that should sand down to a nice finish. Again, try out on scrap planking first.

Let us know how you get on Derek

Pilot Cutter Deck

Quick question . I am about to plank the deck of my 4ft cutter. I have cut some very straight grained wood into 14 mm strips and am about to fix them in place with a 1mm gap for calking.
I bumped into a chap at the Bury show day a couple of months ago and he recomended calking with some pound shop black or grey cheap as chips sealant . But he said to first seal the planking with some Pond Repair sealer , this will stop the black calking sticking to the planks, the exess then to be trimmed off with a razor blade.
I have the black sealant but cant seem to find ant pond sealant thet will do the job.
The decks of the Topsail Schooner he was sailing using this method looked superb.
Has anyone tried this technique an if so where is a good source of the pond sealer.
Thanks in advance
Derek
