Sail boat

HI Jeremy
I use one servo for both main and jib sails on my yachts. I tried using a separate servo on my Cariad but in effect it sailed just as well with the jib allowed to set itself freely on a cross slide on the front deck. I found it difficult to effectively operate the jib servo especially at any distance as the wind can change so quickly.
You could use a Y lead which would make life easier.
Best not to have a spring on the control stick as you really need the stick to remain where placed.
Good luck with the setup and I hope you enjoy sailing at Black Park and receiving all the help you require

Do you want ( or need) to control the 2 sails differently?

if not you can use a "Y" lead and control 2 servos from 1 channel.

Personally I would use the ratchet throttle channel to control sails.

You can buy a ratchet setup for the planet so you could have 2 ratchet channels allowing 1 for each sail.

I suspect the 2 servo idea was developed for computer transmitter use and was intended to have 2 channel mixing with a trim function on each channel.

1st Hansajolle question. Boat is set up with servo for main and one for the fore sail? Am using a Planet T5 so which channels should I use. Also do I need to have ratchet or sprung TX controls for a sailing boat? Could I run both servos off a y lead to start with to make learning how to sail easier????? Am hoping to join Black Park Club in new year so if there are any members on this forum I'll be picking your brains soon%uD83E%uDD13

Have started building. SWMBO wanted her pressie early. Of course I agreed%uD83E%uDD14 if anybody decides to but one of these I have a tip. The instructions supplied are in German. You have to download the English ones, however there is also a set of tips which are updates of the original instructions. These are not on the website. Easy you would think send Aeronaut an email. Ha first find their email address!!!!!!!!!!! After much searching of German translation I found an address and went for it. Got a fantastic reply from Thorsten of Aeronaut with a 4 page translation of the tips. Only problem is they are 5 pages long!!!!! Back we went. Thorsten admitted they had not produced the 5th page, their mistake, so he did me a translation. Really good service. I will hold on to them or if allowed will post them on the Forum for future users? Very nice model to build. Laser cut wood is lovely, so even I should be able make it look good. Have few questions coming up so will continue with this thread as I'm not really going to do Abilene blog.

Prob won't start building til after Xmas as technically it's my pressie from her indoors. Might do a blog but need to finish my speedline huntsman first. 😀 Watch this space

Just a thought Jeremy, I am a scale man myself and while I am building my 1/12 scale Cygnus Crabber I fancied taking up RC sailing and bought my self a almost RTG Surmount, it cost me £61 delivered from HobbyKing I have had loads of fun learning with this very forgiving and responsive little bit of kit !

Just to throw something else into the melting pot. Have just returned from sailing my Wee Nip yacht.
All details can be found on Abington Park web site. Unique parts plans & sail blanks available from the website links.
I recon sub £70 radio. I've built 3 to date all still running. Worth a look.
The original sail design has been modified to Bermuda Rig

I always try to deal with German suppliers when possible because of the prices in the UK you will find the postage is cheaper
cheers

Yes, had a read through the other day. Am currently contacting some German suppliers who are selling at 249%u20AC which is about £170 so depending on shipping may be cheaper than UK. Best price in UK that I have found is £219 P&P. Awaiting to hear what that would be.

Excellent, looks just what you are seeking. German not too good but instructions would indicate that kit is very complete. I would be very interested in a progress report on the build once you run the gauntlet of "she who should be obeyed" in the house.
Good Luck

P.S. would you please advise the name of the retailer your are to purchase the kit from.
II could be interested in one myself!

Thanks for that. I had seen Belairs website and did wonder about the starlet. I've just ordered some glue stands from them and saw the boat sets. Unfortunately won't be able to get to Warwick this year. Food for thought.

Belairdigital offer a set of laser cut parts for Vic Smeeds "Starlet" which you may find is what your looking for.
You can purchase the plans from My Hobby Store, you will also need to supply some strip wood and thin ply for the hull.
Nylet can supply a set of sails

Traplet offer a plan and wood pack for a smaller version of Starlet called "Star Baby" another design from Vic Smeed. Again Nylet can supply the sails.

Belairdigital and Traplet will have stands at the Warwick international Boat Show, so you could check out both models.

If you do consider the Starlet is the yacht for you, I do have a copy of Model Allied Publications booklet called "Simple Model Yachts" which covers the complete building instructions for Starlet. Which first appeared in Model Boats over several months in the Mid Seventys?
Bear in mind the sails provide the power, so a set of ready made sails from a professional sail maker is to be recommended.
I hope the above is of use

I have been building model boats for a few years now. I have always stuck with electric power . I hanker after learning to sail a r/c boat. Can anybody suggest a good starter yacht. I like building so a kit is an option. I like traditional boats rather than racing yachts but would consider anything. Have looked at Aeronaut who seem to to do a couple that may be suiteable. Anybody got any thoughts.

Ps never done plank on frame or built from plans. Would try prof but not sure about plans. Prefer a kit.
