range safety boats

hI , Im also making a pair of range safety launches , but have chosen to use the aerokits fpl hulls as they have both lost their original s/s , if you look through the bmpbt web site there is a small copy of the original line drawings that can be downloaded to show general layout etc . Ive decided to use a single shaft / 400 motor as one of the boats is being built by a 13 year old as her first attempt !

range safety boats

have now progressed with the build of range safety boat, frames, keel, cabin sides, cut and assembled, bottom skins fitted, side skins cut ready for fitting, now fitting out interrior motor mount, floors to take radio gear, going to use a speed 400 motor but not sure what power source as yet. shaft and tube going in this morning.
will do some photos soon and put on here.

Hello Peter,

When I said that my model will be light - I said so because I am going to build the basic frame from balsa - not ply, nor liteply.

Only the hull skins will be ply - and 1/64" ply at that ! 😉
I shall also be making a Sea Rover with the same methods.

I did not mean to infer that fibreglass models are necessarily heavy.

I know about allowing for the moving around of equipment to balance... - I've been building models for a long time !

I might just do a blog - in a while...
I've a yacht to finish first, and another one that needs refitting - and I've only two weeks before the 'race'... 😯

the fiberglass hulls are very light, I have built a 34" boat as well and it is about half the weight of my wooden version I have used lite ply on both boats which is about half the weight of ply.
I tried the brush less motors but they could power a 34" boat without a problem so have changed to brushed 480s, I have got lipoes as well but it needed a bit of weight in the mid section to keep the front down. when you build yours try and make the batteries movable till you find the best place
good luck with the build why not do a blog

Yes Peter,

I saw your 'blog' last night - after I'd drawn my 2ft plans - by scaling down from my own 34A½a€ model - with a pencil and ruler...

Twin brushless is overkill - but it certainly looks smart !
I particularly like the folding masta€¦ 😎

Hmmm - I do have a matched pair of 18-turn Hacker B20's from one of my aeroplane designs.
Those would power a 34A½a€ boat, though... 😉

My 2ft long model will be lightweight - built from balsa and ply in the same manner as the Aerokits models.
The same way as I have made my 'Nymphette' - a 12A½a€ long Sea Nymph.
I do not have a moulded hull to start with.

Ia€™ll use 2S li-po batteries - twin 300a€™s will be plenty of power.

I am very Impressed with your brass vents.
I can easily manage everything - but the vents.

I'll have to try buying some that look good a€“ that would save a lot of time...

This morning I have also drawn another superstructure to mimic a Range Safety Launch - using the same hull lines.
Ia€™ll make two of each bulkhead when building the first onea€¦

Hello chiffs,

I have also scaled down Crash Tender plans - but my model is drawn at 24" long...! 😀

I'm going to do a Crash Tender superstructure with this one... and I'm going to fit a pair of propellers - as per full size.

I'll probably fit Speed 300's - I think twin 380's or 400's is just a bit OTT. 😯

For more about the 'Range Safety Launch', look at -
http://www.bmpt.co.uk/forum_topics.asp?FID=25 - particularly the '1651' thread... which has good photos, but no drawings...

Additional photos here, with a small drawing on the 'RSL 1664' page - http://www.bmpt.org.uk/other_boats_history/Range%20Safety%20Launches/index.htm

You may be as well to buy the Vic Smeed plans for a 43" model - which are detailed - as with all his model designs -

Simply copy the drawings for the superstructure at 53.4% to suit your hull. 😉

I also like the RSL's ( can you tell ? ), so...

I am drawing up plans to make a range saftey launch, have scaled down plans from my 34" crash tender to give me a model of 23" small I know but have little space and like a challenge. what I require are drawings of range safety launch superstructure, deck layout, etc. hope somebody can be of assistance.
