I had another go later and it did open, but it appears to be a plastic kit and he wants to build a biggish RC model. Great pity because Passat was built as a sister ship to Peking.
Cheers, Nerys

Sorry to hear that the Ebay links won't load Nerys, they are quite big boxes by the look of them, and are 1/150 scale kits and are 'PAMIR' and PASSAT', you will probably know of them, very beautiful masted long ships.
Cheers, Pete

Hi Pete, Thanks for your help, but clicking on the link, it came up 'page missing'. The problem with anything large from Ebay would be getting it to my friend, he lives in Australia.

Nerys, regarding the sailing boats, are these any use to your friend, they are quite large kits, I am not very knowledgeable on sailing ships, so forgive if they are incorrect.😊

Thank you Doug and Colin for your help with the Kruzenstern kit, actually I already knew about that and the kit of the Japanese Moshulu and had told my friend. Unfortunately they are both quite small plastic kits and I think he wants something bigger. He is quite an experienced model builder having built a number of barges. I don't think he is expecting absolute accuracy as long as he can produce a model that's 'as near as makes no odds' which is why I suggested he looked at the Underhill plans. Incidentally, I thought that Peking had three sister ships, Passat (museum ship in Travemunde), Pola and Priwall. I will look out the articles on square rigged sail that were in Model Boat Magazine recently, scan them and send on to him.
All the best, Nerys

Hi Nerys,
Parma and Pommern were a little different from Peking and somewhat smaller, 95m compared with 115m (sparred length), 98m deck length for Peking.
Colin has done well finding a kit of Kruzenshtern which as built as 'Padua' was a sister to Peking.
The kit box legend says 'Russian' but she was built in Bremerhaven, Germany.
She now belongs to Russia, since the end of WW2, and is still active as a training ship.
Cheers, Doug 😎
PS Colin please post the link to the Kruzenshtern kit for Nerys to pass on to her 'old mate'😮😉

Good find Colin, well done👍👍👍
Kruzenshtern (or Padua as built in 1926) was a sister ship of Peking/Arethusa and the last of the famous P-Liners built. Pamir being perhaps the most well known/notorious of the P-Liners built for the F. Laeisz shipping company.
Cheers, Doug 😎

Does anyone know if it is possible to buy a kit to build a model four masted barque, a friend in Oz, an ex Arethusa boy would like to build a model then adapt her to be Arethusa or Peking. I have told him of the Harold Underhill plans for the Parma and Pommern, both owned by the same company. I'm sure he could adapt the deck plans to resemble Peking, but I think he would really like a kit.
Cheers, Nerys

Nice to know that there is an ex 'Are' boy on here. My father was 'Willie' Weightman, but I think he would have retired before you joined.

I don't want to inflict too much 'Peking' on the forum, but my former mate and ex Arethusa boy, Les, sent me these pictures and I felt that they were so good I had to share them. They depict 'Peking' on her way to the Hamburg Port Museum recently. Please enjoy as I did.

Doug, I've just read the Wikiwand bumf on Upnor. Couple of mistakes.
The church at Lower Upnor was built in 1884 so how old was Francis Drake's father when he was deacon there?
The first ship, Chichester and the first Arethusa were not moored at Upnor, they were moored at Greenhithe on the Thames. Incidentally, my grandfather was an Arethusa boy on that ship.
Cheers, Nerys

Thank you so much for that plethora of pictures and information on Peking. I knew she was due to start her new life as a museum ship about now. Doesn't she look magnificent now that she is properly painted and has all her yards crossed. I like her new colour scheme, but my sister prefers the Arethusa colours with the painted imitation gun ports. My father was not in any of the photos of her as Arethusa, though I recognised the captain, Cdr, Le Mare and the first officer. The pictures of her at Upnor are of course pure nostalgia. The one of her dressed overall, moored to her permanent jetty, was the scene from our lounge window. We lived in the flat over the swimming baths at one end of the parade ground. The figurehead from the original Arethusa stood at the front, that's been very nicely restored in recent years and a shelter built around it. The lawn behind our flat was where the boys practised the hornpipe, bugle practice and sabre swinging. Gwyneth, my sister learnt all of these skills joining in with the boys.
I have a friend in Australia, an ex Arethusa boy, who joined me as mate when I skippered Centaur was hoping to come over about now, to visit Peking and attend the annual meeting of the Arethusa Old Boys, go for a sail on one of his old barges' Marjorie' and attend the Brightlingsea Barge Match. but unfortunately cannot get a flight due to covid and events being cancelled. We had hoped to meet up at the Brightlingsea Barge Match for the first time in 70 years. Let's hope we can do it next year.
Sorry to waffle on, but Peking or Arethusa means an awful lot to me.

Hi Nerys,
You'll no doubt be pleased to hear that Peking / Arethusa II has completed her restoration and sailed into Hamburg Harbour today and docked at the German Port Museum ( Deutsches Hafenmuseum) 😀😁😊
There was just a report and vid clip shown on the national news of her entering Hamburg Hafen. I'll see if I can find the vid on the Web.😉
Colour pic shows her at Peters Werft on the Elbe before sailing to Hamburg.
Cheers, Doug😎
Take a close look at this gallery of pics of her.
Especially the 'Historic' and 'Time in England' sections.
You never know - YOU, or your Dad, might be on one of them!!😀

Hi Doug,
That's exactly the sort of information I wanted, many thanks. As you know, my sister and I have a personal interest in Peking, having spent many years with her, as Arethusa, being a background to our home and our father his entire teaching career on board her.
Merry Christmas,
Nerys

"Refurbishment in Germany
On August 2, 2017, she was transferred to Peters Werft located at Wewelsfleth for a 3 year refurbishment at estimated cost of €32 million:
New rigging
New double floor steel plates
Dismounting of all masts, because these are too rotten
Docking in dry-dock and renewal of the steel structure
Removal of the cement that fills the lower three and a half metres of the Hull
The ship spent about a year in dry dock.
Peking was refloated on 07 September 2018 with Primer paint Hull.
She stayed on Peters Werft Pier for about 2 months and goes to dry dock again.
Teak will be reinstalled before she will be taken to Hamburg to the German Port Museum.
There might also be an opportunity to make her sail again."

Thanks for that Ian. I know the story of Peking very well having had family connections with her for about fifty years, I was hoping that someone will have seen her in Hamburg and could give me a proper update on what is actually happening to her.

Yes, I knew that, I wondered if anyone had any more precise information than that. Has the restoration actually started and what is being done? I know the state of the hull was none too good before she left America, what's being done about that.

Does anyone know the present state of the sailing ship Peking? Built 1911 by Blohm and Voss for F. Laeisz of Hamburg, she was one of the last great Cape Horners. Peking became the training ship Arethusa, moored on the River Medway at Upnor in 1933 but was sold to the South Street Museum in New York in 1975. She was returned to Hamburg in 2017 to be completely restored. Does anyone know what progress has been made. I have seen photos of her arrival in Hamburg, but nothing beyond that.
