Sea Commander restoration.

Hi Doug,
I have just got around to looking at this motor.
Boy! what a difference.
It reminds me when I used to renovate motor cycles, the satisfaction of taking something that looks like junk and turning it in to gold.
Excellent job well done.
If it looks right it probably is.

Morning Doug, nice to know that you are taking note of the setup. Check out this picture, there is 30mm between the top of the pick up and the rudder yolk. I'm off to Manchester today to collect another addition to the fleet. Will post pics when I get home.
Cheers Colin.
Just had to get pc online to post pictures, water pick up and the new addition.

Evening Colin,
Nowt on the haunted fish tank so I took another look at your pics.
Something was itching at the back of my mind!
Looking again at the last pic it occurred to me.
I think I would be inclined to reverse the yoke on the rudder post, otherwise it's going to be blocked by the water pickup / water tube 😮
Just a thought. I still get one once in a while 😁
Cheers and G'night all, Doug 😎

" is King George up and running yet"
Not yet. Apart from acquiring some upgrade parts, wooden deck etc, I haven't progressed with 'him' yet. Have been testing motors for her though, and have some pico ESCs and RX lined up for her. I'll probably do KGV and PoW in parallel, what works for one ....!

Life's been sort of getting in the way of modelling lately ☹️
I'm now embrangled with German authorities thanks to the BREXIT mess! 😠
If / when GB leaves the EU, especially if it 'crashes' out, I will have to be 'Retitled' as they put it, and my UK/EU driving license will probably no longer be valid here and must be exchanged for a German one. Wonder what happens to my passport, new last august and with European Union on the front!?
Hey ho! As Granny used to say "Worse things happen at sea!" 😉
Ciao, Doug

Hi Colin,
"The motor is mounted on a 16 swg aluminium tray which is adjustable for ease of alignment and removal."
Should have known with an 'old' fox like you!😉👍

"but I have decided to use them for water cooling the esc mount."
Makes sense, although during my tests of your motor, using a Graupner V30R 30A ESC (see pic for setup), I found that the only part that got warm was the diode bridge on the converter board. That's why I added the alu heat sink 'just in case'. Current draw on load in the wet stuff will of course be higher than in my dry bench tests.
Can't wait to see her in action 😉
Cheers,
Doug

Hi Doug, is King George up and running yet, and did you get the radio set working. It was a small price to pay for your magic touch on my Taycol.
Cheers Colin.

Well Doug, well spotted.
The motor is mounted on a 16 swg aluminium tray which is adjustable for ease of alignment and removal. Once the final position is achieved it will be locked in place.
The water pick up and outlet were originally required for the diesel engine, but I have decided to use them for water cooling the esc mount.
Cheers Colin.

Colin, looking at your photo of the motor mount / shaft alignment -
Could it be that you should turn the motor a tad clockwise to starboard!?
Don't want to stress the new bearings too much 😉
BTW: What's the water pick up for? JFF?
Motor shouldn't need water cooling.
Cheers, Doug 😎

Thanks Mark 😊
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder 😉
It was a challenge for an electronicals man but I enjoyed it and hope it performs well for Colin in his Commander. I also fitted ball race bearings on the shaft and modified it to run forwards and backwards off a brushed ESC, and built him the necessary converter board to wire between the ESC and motor.
In exchange he sent me a whole battleship! 😮
A Tamiya 1/350 King George V, and a boxful of mini motors.
Can't say fairer n 'at can ya!?
All the best, Doug 😎

Hey! The photos worked, great 👍
The blue looks great and somewhat familiar😉
Like I used on my Sea Scout refit.
Looks like the same rudder too.
Great minds .... 😁

Hi there folks, a little late, but now we'll under way.
The Hull was stripped and stabilised as it had quite a bit of delamination, once solid I coated with 0.03mm glass cloth and Eze-Kote.
Then primed with filler primer, followed by a good rub down with 1000 grit wet and dry. Primed again and rubbed down between coats, 4 coats.
Top coat is Fiat caprice blue, 6 coats wit rub down with 2500 wet and dry between first 5 coats then I used G3 rubbing compound. It's now ready for lacquer. But I have to rebuild the cabins first.
I have fitted the new propshaft, prop, water pick up and outlet. Also the new rudder.
Have cut away the old diesel engine mounts and made a platform for the Taycol Supermarine motor which was rebuilt and modified by RNmunich (Doug). Was hoping to get her ready for the steam and vintage show at the end of the month.
Some way to go but I have a goal and will try to achieve it.
Cheers Colin.
PS. I can't get the pictures to upload from the app. I will try to use the computer tomorrow.
Fair winds and calm waters,
COLIN.
