It's like when I built the Brooklyn.
I looked and looked until I found.
The origanel Brooklyn were I learned.
She was a very dark green!
I mean the whole tug was dark green!
But, I thought nah, Not for me!
So, I decided on light green with dark green contrast!
And of course black contrast as well!

Young at heart 😉 Slightly older in other places.😊 Cheers Doug
Hi Peter,
It's a tad bit darker, But that's it!
That class tugboat was painted.
Red, mustard yelow, Dark Green!
I prefer a light green. With dark green contrast!
And of course Black for contrast as well!
It's all up to you and what you prefer.
Color wise there's no right there's no wrong!
But, personally speaking green is the way to go!
Oh, you may want to look at burgundy as well!
Hmm!
have to admit Peter it wouldn't be my first choice.
First, it reminds me of NATO olive drab camo paint.☹️
Second, being a 'chalky' finish it will definitely need sealing with a lacquer coat.
Otherwise it is probably porous and will absorb water like chalk based primers do.
Third, I would go for a lighter shade like the Apple Green anyway.
But wadda I know!😉
Cheers, Doug 😎
PS Small tip: if the Apple Green seems a little bright to you - you can tone down a bright top coat colour by using a grey primer and a light undercoat of matt black. 👍

Have checked for the Rust-Oleum paint on the net
Ed and Doug thank you, and have found this on Ebay,
please let me know if you think this may do, will ne a coat of satin varnish over to protect.😐

The "Glow in the dark green" might be fun😁
The Satin Leaf Green looks good👍
Cheers, Doug😎
Been on Ebay Doug, and absolutely no Van der Graff
on sale😒.
Have been a little way through Ed's build, he mentions getting a rattle can from a store, but of course different stores in the good old USA, there must be an option here in the UK....maybe!
cheers Peter😐

"Do you suggest I start the build under topic BUILD BLOG? being better than forum."
Absolutely Peter👍
Re Ed's paint; I believe he did mention what he finally used and where he got it in his Brooklyn Build blog.
Cheers, Doug 😎
Re bits on paint: Get or build yourself a Van der Graff generator and charge the ceiling up a few hundred thousand volts - that should cure the problem!! Or something! 😮

Thanks Doug, that would help if you could find the colour and source of Ed's paint, as you say, I could go over matt with satin varnish, but the more spraying I do, the more bits find there way onto the surface😫.

Thank you for the quick reply Ed, another question,
just been going through your build blog on the Brooklyn, and you fitted a smoke unit (the 12 v one)
which one was it? I have a Graupner 12v one, but have never used it, tend to use water based ones (see Tid Tug video) but they are a bit large.
cheers, Peter

Hi Peter,
I seem to remember discussing this topic with Ed when he was looking for that green for his Brooklyn. I did find a selection for him. I'll have a dig in the archive!
Matt was Ed's preference and no way could I dissuade him😉
Hope he doesn't regret it after he's lifted the cabin off a few times!😮
I learned this lesson when I first painted my 1/72 1.35m destroyer in the mid 60s (dozens of teeny weeny Humbrol tins🙄) and rapidly discovered that muck stuck to it like the 'other stuff' to the blanket😠 😭
If you can only find matt in the shade you want you can always give it a 'blast' of satin clear lacquer. Just make sure the lacquer is of the same chemical base as the paint!!!!
Even works with gloss paint, if that's all you can get in the right colour.
Just flatten the gloss gently with 3000 wet n dry used wet. I use the Tamiya sanding sponges, like I did on my Sea Scout. Then spray with the satin lacquer 😊
Happy building, don't forget the Blog 👍
Cheers, Doug 😎

Hi Peter,
The Brooklyn is about 3" longer that the Jersey City!
Not, actually sure how much more she weighs.
But, it's quite abit!
I look forward to seeing your Jersey City.
Being built!
Lovely shots Ed, of the two tugs in the harbour(bath),
It looks like the tug Brooklyn is a little longer than the Jersey City, am I correct.
I think I will use a similar green to that you used,
will look tasty, but I may do it in satin instead, Doug has also suggested the same.😐

I'd go for a satin type semi-matt finish meself Peter👍
Less susceptible to staining (fingerprints etc) more in keeping with the finish of working ships I've seen / been on. Collects less dust as well😊
But that's just my preference an' wadda I know!?🤔

Hi Peter,
I think the Jersey City Tug.
Would look very good in green!
If you take a look at the picture.
The green I painted the Tug Brooklyn.
Would be a very nice green!
The model will look very good in a matt finish!
The colors I use were all rattle cans of course!
Purchased at the local Walmart here in the States!
Good luck on her build!
I Look forward to reading your build blog!
Any questions please ask!
Cheers, Ed

Thank you Ed for those tips, will be asking you for more, if that's OK with you.😊
I must admit that I like the colour you painted your last tug in, a shade of green, I think it might look OK on this Jersey City, what do you think?😐
Peter

Hi Peter,
Nah, It was my idea to paint her another color!
I just didn't like the fire engine red.
That she's painted in!
The Yellow I used I mixed.
As it was a shade of yellow from a real Tug I worked on some 35 years ago!
I can't wait to see how yours come out.
Will you be painting her red?
Peter,
Where the prop shaft comes out.
Reinforce that area by adding 1/8" plastic to the area!
Then reinforce with the fiber glass tape!
BTW Ed, you painted your Jersey City in a different
colour, is it a situation that you can choose any colour, or where there a limited colour option on this vessel?😉

Hi Ed, I didn't purchase the running hardware, as I already have a motor reserved for this boat, a 6 volt
Hectoperm, which is already geared for such a job, and I think I have a 3 inch four blade prop lying about? so really didn't need the running set if you know what I mean😯

Hi Peter,
That looks like a nice kit.
Looking forward to seeing the build log.
Rear Admiral Ed, is definitely the man to talk to if you have any problems/questions.
Martin555.
Hi Peter,
Looks a nice typically American tug. Sure she will look good when you have finished her and she's on the water. Look forward to seeing a pictorial record of her build and subsequent trials.
Cheers,
Nerys

Hi Rooky,
Nice choice!
I built her about some 5 years ago!
It's a nice kit!
If you have any questions.
Please don't hesitate to ask!
I hope you also purchased.
The running hardware package as well!
Cheers, Ed
PS. as you see mine has handrail.
All around her main cabin!
I also renamed her "Serenity".
After my Grand Daughter!
