General Jumbo - Nostalgic !

I started reading the Beano and Dandy in the mid 60`s. I think Keyhole Kate was the Dandy. Cannot remember General Jumbo though. I seem to have missed out there. A deprived child this must make me.😁
School memories very much the same except I never saw any need for History as it always seems to repeat itself so you are better off with science fiction. The sciences and Maths have been useful though. Seems so long ago now.......Oh, it was!😐
I cannot promise to finish one project before starting another. I know, I tried.

General Jumbo - Nostalgic !

If only we had his RC gear. If I remember correctly he had everything right down to the last soldier, airman, seaman, and marine together with all their equipment ,tanks, planes and vessels too - envied him immensely. Probably started me off as well - imported an Anglian Tug kit from Hobbies complete with Mighty Midget motor (for the grand sum of 5 quid if memory serves) around that time
Mind you desperate Dan and his Cow Pies were also of great interest as was a very scruffy Dennis.
Cant remember if Keyhole Kate was in Beano or Dandy - Reminded me of my neighbour I shared a class with.......

Yes, sounds familiar. Academic subjects, well they were there, but to me, The Manual of Seamanship Vols 1 and 2, Books of round the world voyages in small yachts from the library and of course .Swallows and Amazons'. I have several of that series by Arthur Ransome and still read them occasionally.

General Jumbo - Nostalgic !

It all started for me about 60+ years ago. General Jumbo was my favourite character in the Beano, being able to control and communicate with models fascinated me to say the least.

At school we all took the academic subjects in our stride, Maths, Science, Physics were tools to be used – but for what?. Geography put me in a world of my own wanting more to travel.

As for History! – Well if it was swash buckling, pillaging pirates or conquistadores searching for new lands, it had my full attention! , coupled with a blend of Swiss Family Robinson, Treasure Island, Mutiny on the Bounty and Robinson Crusoe – I guess these were to be my seeds of destiny.

Does it ring any bells ? 🤔⛵
