Waverley and Balmoral

On thinking about it, I remember Balmoral's first season, I think it was 1950, certainly thereabouts.

Agreed Nerys - those were the days - only we did not realise it at the time - took it for granted - until those days were gone..........

Waverley and Balmoral

Had a trip on Balmoral a couple of years ago, Swansea to Lundy Island and back. Would love to do it again, but I still have memories of the Ravenswood, Cardiff Queen and Bristol Queen still running around the Bristol Channel. I remember paying five shillings and sixpence, 28 pence in todays money for the day trip Barry to Weston Super Mare. Also, Medway Queen, Queen of Kent and Queen of Thanet in the Thames Estuary. Those were the days.

Cheers,

Watching Sherlock Holmes last night with Waverley masquerading as a cross channel packet - great stuff. Loved the trips on her - Bournemouth/Weymouth and return . On one return had wind and waves behind - captain remarked we were practically surfing - about the fastest she had ever been........
Would love a trip on Maid of The Loch - in another lifetime perhaps.........

Yes, Balmoral is in Bristol opposite the Great Britain. Saw her last weekend looking very sorry for herself.

Maid of the Loch, yes and how about the Medway Queen. She was virtually rebuilt a few years ago, but they need the money for boilers etc before she can put to sea again.

Great to see that the Waverley appeal has now topped 2 million and there are a number of fund raising events being held around the Clyde area over the next few weeks.
However, I wish some of this enthusiasm could rub off onto the very worthwhile cause of the MV Balmoral. I know she doesn't have the paddler appeal but she is a lovely old ship and she's looking so sorry for herself these days and it's all because the MCA are insisting on alterations to the crew's quarters and object to the way she has been repaired by doubling up plating in the traditional way in the past. Trouble is, it needs 3 million to sort her out.
