The modern emulsions are much more colour fast now compered to the past.
Also i am not sure but i think the varnish has some sort of UV protection.

I don't think it would work to try ordering the 50ml tins through a hobby shop, I've checked the manufacturers website and they are saying no stock available.

Using emulsion and spraying with varnish, not a bad idea. Can't think of any snags off hand apart from discolouring over time. Thank you.

    Cheers, Nerys

Can remember that the Hobby Shops linked to the Plant Nursery's were very obliging at getting goods in on request.(both outlets usually on the same grounds). They were owned by husband and wife (now ex wife has the hobby/craft outlets.) If there is one near you they might be able to order 50ml tins for you Nerys - they got some small items in for me plus a few for stock on several occasions - said they were always looking for new stuff to stock.

    Hi Nerys,
In the past i have just purchased household emulsion and mixed it to the colour that i required and then sprayed over it with varnish.

This thread was started because I was looking for a source for the 50ml tins. The 14ml tinlets are readily available in Hobbyshops and online, and being cynical I think it is because they must make greater profit. Wonderland list, but do not have the 50ml at, I think, Β£3.14. or thereabouts. The 14ml tinlets sell at all sorts of prices from Β£2.95 to Β£4.28. I'm not bothering to work it out exactly but 4 tinlets would add up to 56ml. The cost for that 56ml would thus vary between Β£11.80 and Β£17.12 whereas the slightly less 50ml, if available would only cost Β£3.14. Methinks one item is a little more profitable than the other. And we are the suckers!

Yes, plenty on Ebay but only the 14ml tinlets, If you buy, be very careful, some are grossly overpriced.

Thanks Doug. I think I've killed the idea that 50ml tins are available and although I know a lot of people use sprays, I never have. I know they are, with proper screening etc practical for large areas, but somehow I've always steered clear. It's the traditionalist in me fighting back.

    Cheers, Nerys.
