About this boat

This is the 2nd Lesro Javelin/Streaker that I bought as part of a deal when buying the 1st (yes, I know, I can't help it!)

Here is one of my Javelins just after having a set of strakes retro fitted to it.

When I bought the boat on eBay it came with no strakes as none had ever been fitted to it.

Although the boat is yet to be finished, the newly fitted strakes were sealed and undercoated before being given a good coating of red gloss paint to protect them during the remainder of the refurbishment.

The boat is shown here with a flying bridge shape being clipped onto it in various positions to see if it would suite the boat or not.

Strakes can also be retro fitted to boats that were originally built without them.

Here are a couple of Rapiers (and one Javelin) that I have fitted strakes to that had previously been built and run without them.

A narrow chisel was dragged down the hull to a pre-marked position that was drawn onto the hull in pencil to indicated the exact position of each individual strake.

Once the paint had been removed and the hull was back to bare wood in these areas, the newly cut strakes were fitted.

The hull that is painted in undercoat shows the completed retro fitted strakes ready for painting.

Fitting these strakes can be a bit tricky but it is well worth making the effort to fit them.

A lot of these Javelin kits were built without the strakes being fitted - even though the triangular section wood was included in the kit.

Quite a luxury as it is not possible to buy 36” lengths of triangular section wood of this same size anywhere these days! It has disappeared from the market completely.

It could be that fitting these thin strips and placing them correctly was seen as being a bit too much hassle, and I would also guess that quite a few of these thin strips were split as the supplied (blunt) brass nails were driven into them….and abandoned!

That is a shame as the strakes are a very important visual part of the boats appearance giving it that nice aggressive look.

Strakes also contribute the the superb handling that these hulls have too!

    You are correct Will.

The Streaker was a rebranded name given to the Javelin when it was relaunched with the Keil Kraft brand label on the box and this boat (whatever name they put on the box) shares exactly the same hull as the Rapier.

The smaller version of the Javelin was also rebranded under the Keil Kraft label as the Mini Streaker and this model (whatever the name) had exactly the same hull as the smaller sized Rapier that was called the Stiletto.

Until fairly recently I had a new and unmade Streaker kit (no water stains on the box!) and was able to directly compare the kit plans with a set of the Javelin plans to see if any design changes or updates had been made.

The only change that I found was the name!

I believe I'm correct in saying, that the Javelin/Streaker hull is the same as the Lesro Rapier cabin cruiser hull.
The smaller Lesro Arrow/Mini Streaker, being the same hull as the Lesro Stiletto cabin cruiser @ 25 3/4"

Bob/Zooma will correct me if I have got that wrong.
