    Hi dave976,

Your observations and comments are โ€œspot-onโ€, several of my build and restoration blogs have been posted (sadly elsewhere) but the response I have had to date suggests that there may be a growing interest in these classic models - so there is some hope that others are restoring and building the classic model boats from the 1960โ€™s time period that I continue to enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

When building my early Aerokits Swordsman back in the 1960,s I took great care aligning the bulkheads onto the keel, but some amount of โ€œadjustmentโ€ was needed to ensure the correct depth of fit to the keel when checked against the plan.
At a later stage of construction, some of the stringers did not give the correct โ€œflowโ€ when they were โ€œgiven the eyeโ€ to make sure everything aligned correctly and again some form of correction was needed.
As an eager teenager keen to make a good job of my first kit that had taken all of my spare apprenticeship pay that month I was happy (but a little surprised) that it was necessary to do this.
Making copies of the kit bulkheads to create symmetrical templates can save a lot of โ€œfettlingโ€, but usually shows the need to make some adjustments to most of the kit bulkheads........and sometimes to cut some new wood and replace them !

    Hi Zooma
I started making model planes from kits in the mid50's and soon learnt that banana shaped models didn't fly well. A sturdy flat building board with a prominent centre line was essential. When I started building model boats I applied the same principles and made sure the keel and formers were all firmly attached to board and equal distant on both sides.
I agree the material and cutting left much to be desired but to me that was part of the fun as if I checked and corrected the errors by fettling or replacing the faulty parts the model became mine.
Nowadays we have kits that are produced using accurate laser/water jet cutters and if the designers have done their sums correctly and checked the finished result the process is now much similar to the plastic kits from years ago.
That said I would still check all parts with a dry run as some will need fettling in some places.
Sadly many of my fellow club modellers are not builders of models and prefer to buy second hand and just make them look nice. There are still some scratch and kit builders but if we do not inspire the young at an early age the learning curve becomes more difficult later in life.

Having built, restored, and bought quite a few old model boat kits over the years, I have always been surprised to find how non-symmetrical the bulkhead shapes are when checked.
Most of these old kits are โ€œsaw cutโ€ and so some variation has to be expected - and I suspect that very few of us actually check the symmetry of the bulkheads before gluing them to the keel before assembling our latest projects?

Have built several models from plans.
I always check accuracy throughout the build by reversing templates, then using measurements and squares etc.
The moment of truth is when the frames are all built up, draw around the bulwarks. Turn the model over and, if lucky, the two silhouettes are similar.
If not, this is the time to investigate and rectify before it is too late.

Having bought several vintage/classic model boat kits over the years, I have often had to replace some of the old warped parts.
After drawing around the original part and making an accurate template, I find the centre line and fold the template to reveal any disparity (between left and right) - and the results are often quite surprising.
