This is a 26 1/2” version of the Gary Webb design from bearospaceindustry.com
Gary’s Emma is a sprit rig double end sloop which has a world-wide following.
I built my full size Emma from Gary’s plans. The Emma Jr is also based on those plans of the frames and hull. I made changes to the design by altering the access to the servos. Emma Jr could have remained the same as her big sister but I didn’t.
Gary is being kept informed of the build and he often has made positive comments along the way.
Emma Jr is being designed to be sailed in shallow city reflection pools with water depth between 5-6 inches.
Her beam is 8”; mast 24”, main boom 12” and jib boom 4 1/2”. I am using the sprit rig as Emma Sr is using.
Emma Senior seen here in blue
Emma Jr is not painted yet

Hi Ronald I should have said thickened keel. sorry. The keel is about 1/4 inch wide and where the lead is there is another layer of lead increasing the width to about half an inch. I think it is glued and pinned in place but it was nearly 50 years ago now.
Not very clear but if you magnify the photo a bit you can follow shape of keel. There was enough area of the keel to make good to windward.

Must give credit to Gary Webb for the drawing. He explains the process of stability very well in his YouTube video.
I will give you the link.

I began doing floatation testing in the bathtub and found leaks. After applying epoxy to seams, testing, it became clear that water was seeping through the bolt holes in the keel box.
I sealed the fin bolt holes, and added a threaded rod into the ballast fin and out through the top of the keel box.
No more leaks! Hurray 😁
Next was using a couple shampoo bottles placed along the side of the vessel getting the water to the rail.
No leaks, the model didn’t flip over, and righted itself when bottles were removed.

One more step was accomplished today. Next is the mast, rigging and making the sails.

Added a cotton poplin jib from another project that I had in the shop. Rigged it up and tried it out with a fan and RC turned on. It works.
Next is sail material from Doyle who sent me their lightest sailcloth to use on the Wianno Senior build from 2018.
I created a pattern and taped in place.
The total sail area at this moment is, 246.75sq.inches
Main
186.75
Jib
60
A full size Emma carries 526 w/o a top sail but also carries a ballast bulb/fin 7.5lbs and a Draft of 20”
My draft is 5 1/4”
Not sure of the weight but it’s considerably less.
This sail area may require more than one set of sails. Not an issue, 3 styles are shown here.

Since Emma Jr is Still a youngster, peppy sails were needed. The jib will be pink too.
