Monster Mersey

About 3 months I was asked if I wanted to to a deal with another lifeboat, but this one requires work, went to have a look at boat and what a mess and a tragic state,I know the original builder and told him I just done a deal and your old boat is a mess,so I thought here we go,why do I do it I don't know, but you cannot let something like this rot away in a garden,so I purchased a lifeboat, but when I got there there was additions to,so what I got was TRACTOR,TRAILER & LIFEBOAT,and it was a mess, but I started to refurbish the Monster,so first of all was the trailer, all rusty tracks broken etc,so it got all rubbed down, new tracks, new paint and other bits put on secondly was the tractor, tracks, railings doors fittings etc all broken, and as for the wiring (well enough said) so tractor is now fully operational, radio controlled, working lights etc,now I'm starting on the boat and hopefully will be ready for "LIFEBOAT DAY".Now a log of the images it looks like not a log of work, but blue tackle comes in very handy to make it look like something it's supposed to be

This model was originally built by Mike Pendlebury it took 5 yrs to build,it is on model boat mayhem as "MONSTER MERSEY" it is 1:6 scale (action men figures) he sold it to a gentleman in Scotland who then(so I'm told) left it in his garden as it was to big(why buy it then !)so when I was offered to do a deal with my boat for this,I said I would have to see the model 1st,as I was told it was a MERSEY,as when I got to the pick up point and saw it I new who's boat it was,and nearly cried to see it in this state,so I did not hesitate and said to this person who had it,shame it does not have tractor & trailer he said it does, now since January I have spent a lot of time repairing, fixing & making things, the items were a mess as they were in a garden for over 4yrs (not covered) so I began to restore/refurbish what ever you want to call it,now I have finished the carriage(trailer) I have r/c the Talus (with working lights) ,and as for the hull it had small holes in it lots of broken bits and the mast was broken, now I have repaired the mast, refurbished the superstructure, all with working lights(12v) I am at present sought in the hull out and hopefully will have it on display at King Lear Model Boat Club event on 19.6.16(hopefully radio controlled and on the water, but if not display only

The original builder who I know put every single detail in the talus and the lifeboat but when I got it there were bits everywhere weather broken or not so I said to myself it's a "one off " so let's put it back together and radio control the talus & lifeboat so it is a usable model so I set myself the challenge and in Jan 2016 it began and I hope to show it on the 19th June at my club if not I will still take it to show how far I got and then explain what's left to do

You're to be commended for saving this model, it's unique and a nice original build. To have it lost to neglect would have been a shame. Bravo to you sir! 👍

Because the original builder based it on Scarborough lifeboat,I decided that I would name it after Skegness lifeboat as it's my nearest station to me (52 miles away), so I set about taking all decals off and naming it Lincolnshire Poacher 12-008 (a name tag and ON number was changed inside cabin) even though it has an orange superstructure the bottom half of the boat was a different colour eg: Aluminium below waterline and blue above waterline,I found it difficult to get aluminium paint (some people said silver would be ok) so I looked around for Ali paint and found it in Halford, engine paint(enamel) so I have used that and I have got to get a couple more cans, the reason for the Ali paint was the first 10 Mersey lifeboats were Aluminium bottom and I did not want silver as there is always someone will say that's wrong ( I don't care) as soon as bottom half is finished I will take some more photos

superstructure & inside talus

Inside the superstructure and images from inside the tractor, lots of bits were broken but repaired and put back to where they are suppose to be,this is how the original builder built the model with every detail that is in the Mersey is in this model, all I have done is put the broken bits back and tidy it up,but it's all time consuming before I started on the hull

Monster Mersey

The carriage, talus tractor and boat, the carraige(trailer) I stuck tracks back on with blu-tag to give it an image of what it was suppose to look like, the talus had lots of broken bits,no railings all broken off,the track guard so are held on with blue tack, the back of the Mersey had the mast broken as well as most of the railings around the boat, again blu-tack works wonders,it's a shame but most of the bits were there but broken or missing, even though it does not look in bad condition it wasn't good either, but as I said, here us a challenge and it would be a shame to see it rot away so I decided to take it on.I am now on the hull,it's been rubbed down and ready for paint then I can put it on the carriage and start from deck upwards

Sprayed waterline on Mon, sprayed blue on Tuesday (reacted on front part of hull) soughted on port side, sprayed starboard side on thursday(reacted in same place as other side) why is beyond me but have completely rubbed down top half of Hull again, put sealer on and will progress tomorrow with filler primer (exactly as I did with other side) and hopefully will take,so when I have done it I will take photos before doing the top half(deck upwards)

Copper and steel seems a strange choice for such a critical part. Your welded job will be much more robust and suitable.
Looking at the trailer unit there is quite a distance between the wheels and the caterpillar tracks and at times the wheels would be subject to much of the weight of the boat.
Restoration looks brilliant. I hope you manage to sail her soon.

Lincolnshire poacher

It is gradually coming together,I am not perfect but I am putting it back to what it should be,the railings need painting (easy job),props need putting back on then once the carriage has been welded I will put superstructure on then all that will be required is put radio gear in,the two flags are huge and done by my friend mike also they are not printed but hand painted on silk,he does all flags from 1.96 to 1.6 scale weather there for a lifeboat, tug, yacht, warship, fishing boat etc etc(Scale flags & ensigns 01476 573331 Mike)

Lifeboat day at King Lear did not happen as carriage broke that holds the boat (my fault for not checking properly)the Monster Mersey will be on display at the Newark show, then I will make arrangements to sail her at King lear
