Have a plan somewhere for a rubber band powered one - worked well - made a few to give away . Might be able to work out a mechanism from that

How about a geared 6 volt motor running a cam. These motors can go down to as little as 14rpm and are very small.

Hi jacko ,
I have just had another thought. If you modified a servo to rotate continuously and adjusted the pot for the speed that you want. It will make it easier for you when fitted to your test rig. Martin555. ▲

It might be worth looking on utube, I have seen some rowing mechanisms on there. Martin555. ▲

My plan is to build something similar to this one. ▲

That looks encouraging. Motion of the oar looks realistic (to my untrained eye - not being a rower!). I think the difficulty will be to get two oars doing the same thing in sync - or out of sync if you want to make a turn.
A single servo driving both oars like that would work, but then how do you turn? Two separate servos, one for each oar would allow turns, but will be very difficult to keep in sync when rowing in a straight line. ▲

jacko,
Very difficult to synchronise two continuous rotating servos. They will almost certainly run at slightly different speeds due to friction, manufacturing differences etc. Even if they run at the same speed, tiny changes in loading on each oar for example will change their speed and knock them out of step. There are lots of videos on YouTube showing rowing mechanisms. With a continual rotating servo, the solution seems to be to use one, and then have a separate servo to adjust the drive to each oar, using a clutch as in the attached YouTube example. Trying to sync two continual rotating servos is really tricky. It would need sensors on each servo to measure their relative positions, and then some control unit using these sensors to keep the servos in step. Other solutions use normal servos for each oar, and use some control electronics to drive them both in sync, or out of sync when turning. This is the approach I plan to use. Regards Graham ▲

I had a similar thing happen to me some time ago.
It was advertised for ยฃ20.00 and at the time that seemed quite cheep. It arrived and i thought wow that was good i now know were to get it from when i need another one for another project. Two weeks later i get a letter from HM Revenue and Customs stating that i owe them ยฃ30.00 custom duty for that item. So i am extremely carful and a bit suspicious now when ordering things. I like Hobbyking but I must agree, UK and EU (for now at least) only. I ordered a few things on the Global region with mixed results. Most were ok with no additional costs, right up until I ordered a small pump. I had a letter saying that before delivery I had to pay ยฃ12 for customs and ยฃ8 to the post office for extra inconvenience. Not again...I think.๐

I rarely buy anything from China and as far as Hobbyking are concerned would prefer to order only from UK and EU warehouses, even then, I invariably find things are not in stock. I like getting things in my sticky little fingers, so try to stock up at shows but do use a couple of mail order companies as well. Screws, nuts and bolts, brass strip and sheet all come from Ebay. Basically its all our own fault - the internet and the instant coffee generation who have no intention of building anything........
We have killed a lot of shops including the Hobby ones in our pursuit of "better prices" and its so much easier to scan the net than get up and drive/walk down to our local shop which will also might be a little more expensive. In the seven years I lived in Bournemouth watched 5 model shops close down and the last two have subsequently closed too. You don't get much chance of bargains either over the internet - advised by Channel 4 one day that they were selling about 30 or so old brand new kits (Billings etc) for someone for about 1/3 of the then current price - also have a nice plastic hull which Barry of Westbourne gave me for nothing - asked if I wanted it when picked it up from the counter to have a look. It had been slightly over-trimmed in one spot - 2 minute fix. All 3 local video shops here have closed down in the last few months - could not compete with Netflicks And if work on Artificial Intelligence continues at its current pace there will be very few jobs for either blue or white collar workers to use a non PC phrase........ all will be done by specialised robots - and if they ever did become self aware (which is a possibility) we will end up with a real "Terminator" type scenario - frightening thought - so it would appear we are the basic cause of our own downfall........... ▲

Doug,
My wife recently ordered an item from eBay for a birthday present and the items location stated London U.K. So item was purchased and then we discovered it was in China. It turned out that this person advertises items on eBay, then when you order from him he then orders it from China to be sent to your address. Most annoying. Martin555. ▲

I donโt order from Hobbyking unless the product is in a US warehouse. The service is pretty good from there, however, if it comes from the โGlobalโ warehouse(s) then itโs rolling dice on when you see your goods, plus they send them โsignature requiredโ which means I have to go to the Post Office to sign for the goods. I work 8-9 hours a day, donโt want to run all over town after work. I use Cornwall quite often, am very happy with their prices and service. I would probably order from Krick but I donโt think the Krickstore ships to the US. I also peruse EBay and RCgroups classifieds. I have quite the collection of older brushed speed controllers, motors, and non-digital servos, as I still find them quite useful...my Neptune utilizes an old Futaba MC210 speed control that I think I paid 15 dollars for.
My buddy JP orders from Banggood and is fairly happy with their service, seems to think they have Hobbyking beat on several levels. ▲

Mornin' Martin,
"It seems crazy how a lot of the parts we need for our projects come all the way from China." Mine don't! After one bad experience (Customs & postage) with a HobbyKing delivery from China I make sure to only order from them if available in their EU or UK depots. Most bits / materials I source from Krick or similar here in Germany; delivery in 1 to 3 days and often post free. Some etch or cast parts I get from Italian, French or Czech sources within a week or so. The 'apparently' cheap Chinese price is often NOT by the time you actually get the goods in your sticky fingers! ๐ค Cheers, Doug ๐ ▲
