46'' Vintage RAF Crash Tender Re-do.

I bought this old Vosper Crash Tender a short while back and am hoping (time permitting) to get it as accurate as I can to the original boat. it is a fairly solid boat and had RC stuff installed when I bought it but I don't have a clue what the motor is and what battery setup to go for. Firstly, I aim to paint it and try to get some scale fittings for it as it is without. Although I have done a fair bit of plastic modelling in the past, the RC stuff is all new to me, so any help/advice that anyone can give me would be very welcome indeed.
I will post pictures as I progress.

    HI Stonemonkey,
Lyle has given you some sound advice, I know as I paid him a suprise visit a while back and he kindly let me run his 46inch Fireboat, but after seeing me run it once he may well have thought twice about letting me run it again, the boat does perform well with a smaller than normal IC engine it is no slouch, his Black Marauder also performs excellently as we saw on a recnt visit to the colonies when we paid him a return visit.
    Regards Pete D.

Original RC stuff

These are pictures of the giblets that came with my boat. I will see how it runs with this stuff first but will need to know what battery to get for this. I will then see how well she runs before changing things. Help me please! 😎

Response by Robert on the 27th May 2012:
Forget what any plans show, you need the waterline to look right for your particular set up. I would get the hull fully primed, install your radio and batteries and take it for some trials on the water to make sure you have the weight distribution correct. Along the length of the hull I apply several vertical strips of blue painters tape marked with horizontal lines at about 1/4" increments. Then when I'm happy with the weight distribution, take several photos of the hull so that you can see the water level relative to the marks on your tape. Back at base working from your photos, flip the hull upside down and shim it so that the actual water line is horizontal. When you have decided how much of the waterline you wish to see when the model is floating (say 1/4" - 1/2") make a jig to hold a pencil horizontally at that height then trace around the model. I have done this on my last few builds with good sucess. The only thing I would add is when putting the tape mask for the paint line on the boat, you must use something use a high quality model makers tape like Taimiya or you will get bleed through.

This is great information Robert, don't know if I am up to making a Jig to hold the pencil horizontally at a specific height but will have a go.
    Many thanks man.

That is exellent information, I will take notes and use this on my build. At the moment I have aquired some plans and made up the templates, looking through the blogs. I can't see any information on the start of the paint process Ie from sealing to finish coat. I am trying to keep a few steps ahead of were I a m in the build any help would be greatully accepted

The colour is from BS 381c colour chart which dates back to the early 1950's. 631 is listed as light grey.
You can Google colour chart easily

Hi Rex3644, yeh I posted the colour thing way back in time at the start of this site, again as there was quite a dispute going on way back then about the colours, I took the info off the Vosper Thornycroft drawing that I have and at the time working in the motor vehicle repair trade we had well over 7000 colours on list including the BS charts.

46'' Vintage RAF Crash Tender Re-do.

Just had It's first run today at Fleetwood. Initially went well then changed 7.2v 2000mAh to a 9.6 4600mAh battery then went very well but ended up blowing a fuse and had to wait 25 mins until It blew onto a lee shore. Now have a small hole In the side of the hull where It hit the Island for my troubles. Smaller prop went on 45x and things seem fine again. 3rd run tomorrow at Fleetwood with a 40 prop and speed controller adjusted. Video's to follow and I have to thank the members of Fleetwood model boat club In despatches for fantastic help and expertise, they were brilliant! 😛
