Not built boat yet, so no idea about weight. I'm simply formatting a battle plan for the build, asking questions now to get right parts on order or in place, but thanks.

Hi maverick, well that helps. I would guess your boat weighs about 20 pounds and suggest 12 volt batteries or 3S in Lipos. Don't use Lead acid they are heavy and less amp hour capacity than you expect.

You will find a good performance at 6 or 7 amps, that is say 75 Watts or one tenth BHP. Use thick wiring and a 15 amp fuse and you can run on a 50 amp esc but do check that the esc can connect to 12 volts.

If you worry about amps then at 50 amps (English ones that is) and 12 volts that comes to 600 watts power the wiring will give out first, just follow the smoke!
    750 Watts = 1 BHP.

Get yourself 2 or 3 different props to see which works best.

You are not the only one to get confused over amps, if you do want to do the simple calculations always try for the volts being a bigger number than the amps.
    Hope this helps
    All the best

Hi just because the motor has a rating of 100 amps does not mean you will use this amount of current. It depends on how big the propeller is and how many watts you are using. I use hi rated motors at low voltage and they run a coaster type boat at just over 1 amp.
An analogy is you buy a car that does 120 mph and you are asking where can I drive it at that speed when really you are just going to the local shops!

Tell us battery voltage and model type prop size. Should be able help then

To answer your question we need to know exactly the make and model of the motor. As regards ESC's with high current ratings they may not always be true values and you need to research carefully.

    Hi Maverick,

There would not be a problem as long as the voltage is right, more amps is better.
Don't forget to get an esc that has reverse, don't ask me how I know. ๐Ÿ™„
That is quite a big motor, what are you using it in?

    Cheers,
    Stephen.

If I have a motor rated at 100 amp and cannot find an affordable 120 amp ESC, can I use a 320 amp ESC instead?๐Ÿค”
