HMS Tean

Just to give a quick update, after having no end of bother trying to keep her upright, she now knows which was up is, even after being rolled to the side!

A quick video of the bath test if anyone is interested..

HMS Tean

HI guys,
Been Building my model of HMS Tean for just over a month now, after having a few little niggles with the bow not equalling out on both sides (I think it was a measurement problem on my behalf!), there wasn't much I could do with it, as a result one of the sides is slightly out compared to the plan, but it doesn't really detract from the model.
I have made working lights for it, two nav lights and two "search" lights, although they don't pinpoint anything, just shine out!
She is in the paint shop at the minute, the Hull has had two coats of primer already, one more and I think she will be ready for the final colour. Hopefully will start spraying the superstructure tomorrow.

It's nice to see some others are tackling this build! it's my first Scratchbuild, my Grandad said I should give it a go after he built Glyn Guests Paladin about 7 years ago...
Cheers,
Steven

I am building the HMS Tean hull but will be making several decks to allow a couple of freelance superstructure designs. My sister is a tailor/dressmaker and she gave me some lightweight interfacing it works fine for covering with thinned cellulose at it is fairly stretchy, might try the Iron on type to see if it holds in place while coating.

Thank you, I need all the plaudits I can get, next project is the Greek fish boat Taka series. Going through a hell of a lot of scroll saw blades though.

flycatter, that is absolutely awesome fella. well done....

So far on five I have done gave all been done with epoxy. Solved a lot of sanding with using a palm sander. Seemed to work well. 😱 😯

Flycatter I tried using 30 minuite epoxy and some jay-cloths on another model once but to be honest sanding got a bit more involved an I lost interest. I pick it up again every once in a while and do another panel while some paint or glue dries. I tried lightweight f/glass and finishing resin on another which went better, but personally, I won't be using that method again,I seemed to be sanding forever but I might have done it incorrectly, which is more likely to be honest. Hope this helps.

HI everyone. Nearly finished superstructure. Flycatter dessie way is sound. Great tissue instruction that. I started but didnt like using it so I opted for sanding sealer. Great finish after a few coats. Tissue wud b stronger though. Oh just so you know I used a slec rudder as its fits perfect without having control wire on top of deck.

Debbie what is your thoughts on using epoxy and lt wt fiberglass?

HMS Tean

HI Flycatter60, the tissue I used came with an aircraft kit, but most shops should have lightweight aero modelling tissue in stock. Colour is Irrelevant as you'll be painting it anyway. A Couple of thinned coats of dope first, lightly sanded, then start at the centre of the sheet working out wards.

Just starting this beast as a first do it yourselfer. Got all lumber today and will do layout this weekend. Sure would like to see some pics of work on bow and stern, might help ease some headaches.

Ooo great minds and all that. I have just finished the hull and started sanding a bit. Next like urself des I will be doping and tissue for extra strength and ultimately a bit o waterproofing. Gonna use some silicone sealant inside as well especially at join for underside at the keel.

Yeah I had to take about 6 mm from the bottom of the transom as well, but like you said, that's modelling. Started sealing the hull with thinned dope, before fitting the motor and shafty bit.

HMS Tean

Yea I did have an issue but didnt take any off. I did fillthe gaps at front though. Transom was a git. Making sure it doesnt twist. Anyway its modelling. Glad I made it a bit wider though. More space to manoeuvre.> 😟

HMS Tean

Did you have an issue with length, I had to remove about 1/4 inch from the bow so the sides meet where intended
#6

HMS Tean

Good call on the deck issue. I have started the build and nearly completed hull. Didnt use 3inch wide instead I used4. Hopefully this will Improve displacement a bit as I thought she looked a bit narrow. Ships sides were a bugger at bow. Lol.

HI John,
I've removed the 3mm deck from inside the superstructure in an effort to save weight up top, I was thinking I might add some triangular balsa to the base of the hull amidships, try to stabilise rolling a bit more
#4

HMS Tean

HI dessie,
Sounds good. I had a look at the plan today and I might just build another one after following the original and try to sub the balsa superstructure for plasticard etc. wonder if there will be a weight prob. I.e. top heavy. Oh and I think I wil add a keel as well. We will see. Build the original first though. Good luck with the rest o it.

HI John, got the decks cut for mine today. A few minor bumps enroute but
nothing to lose any sleep over. 😊
