Paddle Steamer Waverley

Just been thinking, my paddleboat experiences go back even further than I said in my previous post. I was regularly being taken on Campbell's fleet out of Barry, to Minehead, Weston and Ilfracombe back pre WW2. There's a photo floating around somewhere of me in a pushchair on Birkbeck pier in Weston having just landed from a paddle steamer. I was probably about three at the time.

Memories, memories! Nerys

Thanks PJ,
They look quite similar to the Mt.
Washington in design.
A shams that none survived!

Also off the New England Coast. The ferries Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Island Home, among others.
So many ships . . . and so little time . . .

I visited the Ticonderoga years ago, I forgot she had a walking beam.
Thanks for the reminder.
They were in California as well.
And of course, the Mt Washington was on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire.
I'm sure they were in many other places as well.

The Shelburne museum has the the SS Ticonderoga. She use to run Lake Champlain during the summer. I saw her about 25 years ago. Has a true walking beam engine.

Hi Nerys,
I just took the virtual tour of the Medway Queen👍
Another wonderful old Side Wheeler.
It is great that you were on both Ships.
I'm very happy that they are being restored and preserved.
We used to have Walking Beam Side Wheelers on the Hudson River. But unfortunately, none have survived.

LOL I am afraid I'm not too many years away from that .....
So far my collection resembles "The Island of Misfit Toys". I've picked up several boats that are old builds and have been neglected. I'm giving them the TLC they need, hoping to bring them back to their former glory. Once I get enough practice/ experience I intend to take on a full build.

Hi Nerys,
That must have been an amazing experience!!
She is only two years older than me!
She does MOVE!
I am pleased that she is being preserved and operational as she is the last of her breed, as you already know.
You have a great history of Sailing!
Thanks for sharing😊😊
I took the liberty to include a link for other Mates that might be interested.

Hi Trev,
I was lucky, she ran a trip from Swansea to Ilfracombe and Lundy Island when she last came south, four years ago and we had a great day out on her. It was the first time I'd been on a paddle steamer since the late forties, when I had a few trips on the Medway Queen when she was still plying the waters of the Thames Estuary, before that it was the Ravenswood out of Barry. A trip on her from Barry to Weston Super Mare and back used to cost me 5s.6d. in old money in 1947, She was one of P & A Campbells ships who ran a small fleet of paddlers in the Bristol channel. .

The programme for the Waverley's visit to the South Coast in September has been announced. Great if you want to sail from Portsmouth, Southampton, Swanage or Yarmouth, but unlike other years, nothing has been announced for North Wales, Bristol Channel or London area. What a pity, it's four years since we saw her in the Bristol Channel and all the other places. She will be sorely missed, I was looking forward to a trip to Ilfracombe or somewhere on her in September.
