Hi David, I have built a couple of Billings models including the Zwarte Zee tug - albeit a number of years ago - but the wood was excellent in those kits. Even some of the complex double bends required were fine provided you followed their instructions on soaking the wood before trying bending, and then clamping in place until dry and then gluing. Maybe their quality has slipped. I am looking at another Billings kit, so hope their quality is still good.

Hi I can help with the first query. If you want the boat to plane then essential to fit the spray rails. These make the boat much dryer and deflect the water to one side.

I will leave others to answer the tugboat question.

First up I have a part finished Sea commander which all good, Im just wondering if I should build as is "vintage look" or add Spray rails and strakes to the bottom of the hull, are these really necessary / helpful?

Also I tried to build a Billings Samson Tug (1970's) and I really struggled because the wood was so poor quality and fit, I really want to build one so I bought another one for another go, would the billings building slip help, and would I be better transferring the profile to new better quality Marine Ply ?? thanks - Dave
