Oh how the memories start coming back. Like Ed and Rod I made a 'platform' and mounted a Jetex 50 on it, when I was 10 or 11. I think the idea came from an elder brother who was in to making model aeroplanes, some of which were Jetex powered. The Hawker Hunter and Supermarine Swift come to mind.
My first build when 11 was a KeilKraft Mermaid. Nice little boat but a shame I don't know what became of it. I then bought an Aerokits Nymph ready built from a friend and ran it with an ED Bee Marine.
I loved the look of the RAF Crash Tender but it was way out of my league. I did however make a couple of balsa hard chines and from one made a plaster mould and made a fibreglass hull. It never made it to the water however.
With all this experience under my belt, at the age of 12 - 13 I made an auxiliary ketch which I named 'Speedwell', and by some fluke this has survived to the present day. It now has radio control and I sail her occasionally on Yeadon Tarn. This is shown in 'My Harbour'.๐
