    Hi
With reference to Roy (2 of 6) I seem to recall that Model Boats back in the 90's had an and article on the water in a tube idea.

That's all right, Mr Ryan. My Morse is so rusty, I could be sending him dimensions on Playmate of the Month.

Barry, I did see another Seakeeper video where it was used on a smaller (not a model) boat. It was quite effective.

The "bobbing and rolling" is not that noticeable to the observer unless one is specifically looking for it. However, it is quite noticeable in videos when recorded close up (or zoom in) or with an on board camera.

Roy, what I meant about "not spinning" was it rotated part way CW or CCW as a counterweight. The wheel looked like a ferris wheel on the deck with the axis running fore and aft. This could have been a simple weight transferring mechanism below the deck.

Flying in a gyro copter I felt wind on my right shoulder. Expecting the craft to roll a bit I was ready on the stick. The roll never came. In an airplane it woukd move the wing n the stick movement compensates. Well like a dummy I wa ready. I said to instructor that was heavy wind but we didnโ€™t budge. He says idiot itโ€™s a GYRO copter. The gyro effect keeps it stable. On RC Helis I use a gyro to keep it stable. So if we use a RC airplane it heli gyro I guess it would keep it upright n not bothered by rolls. Anyone try it? On the Navy ship DE 1040 Garcia we had side fins to compensate the rolling. The gyro fir RC is small the size of a Rc receiver it has no moving parts. It works to control servos. So my point is if I have side fins controlled by servo and corrected by a RC gyro it should stabilize rolling? If I build a gyro that spins it woukd be larger n more complex. Iโ€™m wondering if a sailboat could use this technique best? What u think. Btw Iโ€™m surprised all motor full size boats donโ€™t have that white box.

Hi Lew, I seem to remember prior perhaps to RC that the 'straight runner' boats could use a spinning gyro. It assisted directional travel and was more steady.

You said in your post "not spinning" not sure what you mean?

As far as bobbing about, weight distribution can help. Think of a barbell in weight training. If you ballast a model towards the bow and stern there is less bobbing about. But there is a penalty in steering.

I have a yacht that relies on internal ballast and not a deep keel and this does not bob about.

Cruise ships have stabilisers and there is an electronic device that senses movement that could be used to operate stabiliser fins. I think model helicopters and submarines use it.

A cheap way I read about was to have a tank of water like a slightly lengthened coke can and fill to one third with water. It would have baffles inside to slow the transfer of water from one side to the other and mounted high up.
This causes a delay in the water transfer and does combat the boat movement.

    Intriguing!

I don't know if anyone of you have done this, but has any given thought or installed a gyro or flywheel for stabilization in a scale RC boat?

I ask this because I accidentally came across a YouTube video of a model aircraft carrier (~ 4-5 feet long) that the owner installed a large stabilization wheel on the deck to counter roll. This wheel in effect shifted weight port and starboard, but not by continuous spinning. It worked.

This could have been simpler and below deck, but I'd did spark some interesting thoughts on reducing boats "bobbing" about.

I searched and found another YouTube video with a model boat hull about 30 inches long with a small gyro in it. I was amazed on how much it stabilized the boat.

    Any thoughts?
