High Impact Styrene

I use at least three types of cement for styrene (and ABS). Manufacturer doesn't seem to matter. Make sure it is a weld cement that actually melts the styrene. For this reason I prefer not to call this "glue" but "cement".

Types:
- Hobby supply thin weld cement (not as thin as Acetone), usually in glass bottles
- Hobby supply medium weld cement, usually in tubes or squeeze bottles
- Hobby supply thick weld cement, usually in tubes
Optional:
- Acetone (100% in nail polish remover bottle), very thin, evaporates fast.

I mix my own glue using MEK mixed with ABS+ (waste from my printer). I mix relatively small amounts in a well ventilated area and use rubber gloves. I put it into needle glue bottles I get through Aliexpress. The one downside is that the needles do clog up from time to time but acapuncture needles clear the blockage. This glue welds or fuses HIPs and ABS very well have been using this for many years and it definitely works and the cost is about 1/10th of commercial glues.

Thicker CA's have a lower odor than thin CA's. There is an odor and hazing issue when you use hotshot type of accelerants on thin CA's. I try to avoid that particular combination. I also avoid quick setting (5 minute) epoxy's as they definitely have an odor.
I still think Tamiya Thin Cement is the best way to go as you use it sparingly.
However, if you are deeply concerned of glue odor and toxicity I suggest using the Testors low odor non-toxic styrene glue.

I just did a research of glueing high impact styrene, finding many various ways but most stated a health risk and ventilation a factor. One said they have had good results with nail polish remover (acetone) but ventilation was also required.

Be aware of the health risks when using CA and other adhesives.

I have a new Club 500 boat kit ready to build and have the same questions about what would be the best adhesive to use to glue it together with.

As far as I know the Club 500 kit is also moulded in High Impact Styrene (?)

There are a lot of Club 500 boats in use and so I have been given a lot of different options to consider from owners who prefer one type of adhesive against the another.

A strong liquid poly would appear to be the most universally used option, but whatever type of glue is used it is important to check it on a scrap piece of the actual plastic used to make sure that it does not attack the plastic in a detrimental way.

Can't go wrong with Tamiya Thin Cement. I also use any number of the CA glues on my kits like ZAP or any of the Bob Smith CA's. Permabond 940 is a strong CA that is great on styrene as well. 😉

Have been told High impact styrene has rubber in it so needs styrene glue.

Normal poly cement won't work and is OK for airfix plastic models.

Anyone know if different plastic glues (instead of poly cement for example) has to be bought to use High Impact Styrene Model boat kit parts ?

Thanks, Tall Paul.
