Hi Southportpat, in the UK a steam test certificate lasts for 2 years, pressure vessels are tested to 1.5 times the normal running pressure and safety valves checked that they also functioned within the pressures used. Requirements mainly by insurers but safety considerations are the most obvious.

If you are using gas to heat the boiler this is pressure tested as well unless this is a ready filled container as bought.

Probably other countries have there own legislation and local clubs should be aware of the requirements. In the UK most gatherings of steam powered models and railway engines where there are visiting operators would be required to show a current steam test certificate.

I expect inputs from French and other European members can tell you their experience. I would expect there is legislation in force in the USA but perhaps not surprised if it is not, especially under the current administration!

How Popular Are Live Steam Model Boats - I have two but don't use them very often, do you have to get the boilers tested if you are not in the UK , if so how often ?

Personally I like the models but find them expensive and high maintenance.
