The three Colour Squadrons of the Royal Navy created in 1558 Nick.😉
Historically, the English fleet was first divided into three squadrons distinguished by colour in 1558, the Admiral of the English fleet, the Lord Admiral of England's squadron, flew a plain red flag as its ensign. The Vice-Admiral of the fleet, or Vice-Admiral of England, flew a plain blue flag, and the Rear-Admiral of the fleet flew a plain white flag. Order of precedence was red, blue, and white until May 1596. Pics show the Squadron ensigns and Admirals promotion path from 1805-1864.

In 1864 the colour squadron organisation was abolished and the Royal Navy adopted the White Ensign of the former White Squadron. The Red Ensign of the Red Squadron became the ensign of the British Merchant Navy (The Government Ensign), and the Blue Ensign of the Blue Squadron became the ensign of the Auxiliary Fleet.

Admiralty of the White Admiral of the Red and Admiral of the Blue. What were they and what did they morph in to?

Your welcome Doug - I do find this board a bit addictive lol

A lot of everyday sayings in English come from either naval or sea fareing history

Such as

Ship Shape and Bristol Fashion

Thanks Pat🤗 Keep the Qs coming.
You can't work with naval shipyards and the navies themselves for 40 years without something rubbing off. It also makes your ears prick up (🐱) when you catch something naval related on radio, TV and in recent years Online News Services.
I also liked to research the histories and, where possible, plans for the future of the of the navies that I visited. Knowledge is power😉
I also like to look up the operational records of the naval ships I am interested in making models of, esp. RN and WW2. Any Docus about marine and Naval History on TV, Cable, Internet and I'm there🤓

I think I've now entered that phase of life (like many other members I suspect😉) where I remember more details of what happened up to fifty-sixty years ago than of what I had for lunch yesterday🙄
Er, what were we discussing?🤔
Cheers All, Doug😎

No need! I missed the window. I redacted my answer to give others a chance, wasn't quick enough to "unredact".🤣🤣🤣

Well done Doug your a very knowledgeable chap - this accident brought a rule in that whenever a British Submarine detects fishing vessels when on a training mission they immediately have to surface

To put everyone out of their suspense and misery!😁
The HMS Trenchant, a Royal Navy nuclear-powered submarine, was involved in a tragic accident on November 22, 1990, when it collided with the fishing trawler FV Antares in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. The collision resulted in the sinking of the Antares and the death of all four crew members. Arran 'Trench' threw me - never 'eardovit!
As I remember it the incident took place in Bute Deep or summat like that.

I believe There was also a similar incident with a USN sub and Japanese fishing vessel.

Cheers All, Doug😎

Should I also remain silent?
Arran 'Trench' and slightly wrong date fooled me for a while but Arran and November 1990 finally joggled the old greys cells😉 'Catch of the year!'☹️
