I love Pat's questions about sailing ships and vessels in general, so I'll ask you this one.
Do you recognize this "bergantina" or "nave goletta," which you Anglo-Saxons call a "Barquentine"?
A little help before doing a web search (which will surely give you a definite answer).
It's an Italian training ship.
Its name is mythological, and it was an ancient helmsman.
This mythical helmsman guided warriors fleeing Troy to Italy, where they founded several cities. Today, he gives his name to one of Campania's most beautiful coastlines. It is less well-known and further south than the Amalfi Coast.
Have you ever seen it in your ports?

Palinuro.
Close Pat (but 'No cigar' as the saying goes🤔)
Palinuro is named after Palinurus the famous helmsman of Aeneas's ship (after the fall of Troy the defeated Trojans toured the Mediterranean). Palinurus is seen as a prototype of an experienced navigator or guide. 😁

Well done Doug!
According to legend, Aeneas (son of the goddess Venus and the mortal Anchises) is considered the founder of the Roman race, ancestor of Romulus and Remus, founders of Rome.
The reality is much more prosaic and less poetic: the city was born from the fusion of three peoples (Latins, Sabines, and Etruscans) in a strategic position.
If you used the internet, that's fine too (perhaps it even serves as further confirmation sometimes), but if you did without, I truly congratulate you; who remembers Virgil's Aeneid these days?

I agree with you, Duncan.
This is one of my favorite sailing ships.
It's a shame I can't find the original photos I had on my computer; these are all taken from the internet.
Sorry, Doug, but I completely forgot to answer your question.
I'm going silly.
The Palinuro is in Taranto, specifically in front of the Aragonese Castle.
Taranto was an important and powerful city in Magna Graecia until the Roman conquest.
Today, it is one of the most important bases of the Italian navy.
It is also well known to the British because during World War II, the Italian fleet at anchor was attacked by the British Navy with torpedo bombers.
The operation was successful and caused considerable damage to the battleships and other surface vessels.

You rely heavily on TV shows.
They're very good in many cases, but be careful to consider them as authentic sources.
Remind me to explain myself further. I'll give you an example you the example of a TV series about the Odyssey (which is also very beautiful and very well made) that has misled many.
If you're interested, I'll tell you details that might surprise you.
Don't misunderstand what I'm saying, logically I know that your culture is certainly not based on TV but on something else and is much more solid.

Dan Snow on the History Channel has done some very good documentaries on naval topics.
His last program was about the search for Shackletons Edurance - all well worth a watch

No I think he was making point this forum is about models and directly related material. If one wants to discuss other tops maybe start another forum topic.

Yes, you're right, EdW.
Now that I'm reading the other forum posts, I realize he's against Pat.
I'm very sorry these things happen.
First of all, I think the tone should never be so rude.
Pat has done nothing wrong and hasn't provoked anyone, yet he's receiving gratuitous insults.
I think Pat is a very knowledgeable person in the naval field, and I enjoy following his topics and messages.
I can't always keep up with him because he's a volcano of initiatives and information, but he's a true naval enthusiast.
I'm happy he's present on this forum, and I'm sorry he's leaving because of completely inappropriate comments.
I believe that if a forum member doesn't like or isn't interested in another's comments or topics, they can simply ignore them (by not liking or posting comments).
However, it's annoying to intrude on other people's topics just to post denigrating, offensive, and unhelpful comments.
Even if we don't see each other in person on a forum, it's normal for likes and dislikes to arise, but I don't think it's fair to attack anyone. For example, I focus a lot on the people I respect on this forum; I always follow them and enjoy reading their comments, even if I don't always agree.
Why waste time on pointless criticism?
Perhaps it's envy that drives your fingers to the keyboard?
Excuse me, EdW, for my outburst, but I think Pat is an excellent asset to this forum, an added value (even if sometimes too prolific, hahahahaha) like you, Doug, and so many others.

Hi Austin, you're too kind.
I appreciate your kindness and noble intention to calm things down, but I don't think we should be so harsh and offensive.
I didn't mind Pat's advice, and it doesn't seem off-topic, but that's beside the point.
Even if it had been off-topic, I wouldn't have responded so harshly.
Furthermore, that can't be the reason why Brightwork has inundated all of Pat's posts with similar comments.
It's very unpleasant and should be condemned.
Why ironically call him a professor?
If Brightwork is bothered by his knowledge and nautical expertise, simply refrain from participating in his thread; there's no need to attack him.
So, every time someone provides information or answers a question, they can receive the same treatment? What kind of forum would that be?
Doug, EdW, and many others are very knowledgeable, but I would never dream of ironically calling them professors.

Chris, you're absolutely right.
When you talk to people face-to-face, you realize whether they're educated or not, whether they're truly knowledgeable and prepared.
On a computer, everyone can seem super cultured, that's true.
I'll tell you, however, that there are some clues that let me know if someone is writing with knowledge of the topic or just read about it online.
But that's not the problem, in my opinion.
Is it necessary to treat someone unnecessarily badly?
I can't read all the topics I'd like, and I've left many unfinished, so imagine wasting time on the ones I don't like.
Just ignore the topics you don't like without being rude.
