In 1952 when I was 8 years old, a friend of my parents was traveling to Europe on the maiden voyage of the SS United States. Back in those days friends were allowed to board to bid farewell and I was one of them. This was my first time aboard a ship! The SS United States still holds the trans-Atlantic crossing record with an average speed of 44MPH to this day. It also had the largest funnels on any ship built.
It look like this is the end of this ship. She is scheduled to be sunk next month off the coast of my home state, Florida after sitting idle for 57 years. Farewell.
