What happened to 'Notifications'?

Reopening the flood gates didn't jam it, some straggler code did. I missed removing the emoji on the new account email verification mails. It was repeatedly trying to send the verification to a new member and wasn't progressing to the other notifications. We'll get there! There's a backlog of 260 emails from this morning about to go through! It should take 45 minutes to clear and then we'll be back on track...

What happened to 'Notifications'?

CALLING ALL GENTLEBODES AND LADYMOLDS!😁
Looking at the sudden flood of Notifications (21 in all) I received in one burst this morning, I noted that 8 of them were about 'Likes received'. Amounting to ~40%, relatively low for me.
I've now turned this function OFF in My Account, as well as the Weekly Notification, which to my mind is irrelevant if I only switch ON those Notifications that interest me anyway.
Although 'Likes' are very gratifying I can see who is liking my stuff in the On Site Notifications when I log in. No need to clog the net with them😉
I've switched everything OFF except New Trending Topics and Replies and Private Messages of course. That should reduce my daily Notification mail traffic by up to 70% on most days😮
I'm sure that if we all did this we could significantly reduce the pressure on our MB site server, as well as our own Mail In Boxes👍😉
Go to your Account in the drop down box underneath your log in name on the top left of any page. Then check out the Notifications Panel, bottom left, and Uncheck as many as you can. The site Default setting is still 'ALL' I believe.
Thanks for your help Guys and Gals👍
Cheers, All, Doug😎

What happened to 'Notifications'?

Hmmm!
Can it be that 'reopening the flood gates' has jammed up the system again?🤔
I haven't received any Notifications for two hours or so, although the Foghorn tells me that things are happening!
Maybe the yacht emoji was just a fluke side effect?

Great! Pleased it woiks now!

The 'stay home' traffic doesn't appear to have increased much when you look at google analytics. Although there does seem to be more posts and interaction. I'm risking (now I know emojis were the issue) increasing the hourly email threashold to 340. It'll help speed up the email notifications when there is high load and keeps us just below the 360 limit (if it does exist).

Weird that an 'old' emoji should suddenly cause a problem!?

What happened to 'Notifications'?

RIGHT, so... Emoji's.

Something has changed on the server and I'm fairly sure now it's due to having the yacht emoji ⛵ in the email headers as daft as that sounds. Seems ok to have emoji's in subject lines, but not the "from name" anymore. So emails will look a fraction more boring with just the text "Model Boats Website" now but it does appear to fix the issue.

Any notifications not received in the last few days will never be received mind you, but lets hope it's ok from now on. This post can be test no.1!

What happened to 'Notifications'?

Great to see you 'up and about' Stephen👍
Thanks for the info, obviates my mailing you😉
Does seem strange that we appear to be well under the 'usual' limits.
I was beginning to wonder if it was a side effect of the apparently increased web traffic caused by us all having to 'Stay Home'.
I've noticed disturbance on some streaming services and from time to time my DSL connection has collapsed🤔
Trust all is well with you, still 'Home Officing'?
KUTGW👍

What happened to 'Notifications'?

Well, I've done some digging and some tests, this morning I was able to successfully have the website email me within seconds. But I did go back a week to check the email sending history and see we've been topping out at 170 emails an hour. This is a deliberate limit to spread the load over time. Now... the question is, is that still too high? IONOS the web provider doesn't publish what the limits are, I'll need to phone them later, but another website suggests the limit is either:

6 per minute or
3500 per hour in the Unlimited Pro packages (which is this website)

If it's 3500 we're well under, even 360 an hour should be enough.

I'll find out. Unfortunately providers hate emails because they're often abused by spammers. Push notifications are the fastest most reliable way to get notifications really. They're not buffered and come through to anyone with the app immediately.

Worst case scenario; emails will have to be spread even further to ensure any thresholds are not hit. I'll probably reduce the sending priority for anyone who hasn't been online recently and they'll get the emails during the night!

update it could be something to do with sending mails from within crontab, this is a scheduled task that runs every minute. Doing some testing...

OK Guys, got the message! Yours anyway😉
Still no Notifications in my Mail Box either.
Last time this happened it was a server problem.
Apparently there was (is?) a limit on how many mails could be sent by the site,
and we were all so busy posting (which in itself is GOOD👍) that we exceeded the limit!

I'll check with Stephen, hope he's OK.
If not, e.g. quarantined without Internet access or something, we're all in trouble🤔
I can only see and experiment with code in the cache of my PC.
I.e. for the page I actually have on my screen. Anyone can do that.
I can't alter anything on the server itself, only Stephen can, as far as I know.
Best I can do is send him a direct Mail. I'll keep you posted! 🙄
Stay safe folks,🤞
