ACRYLIC PAINT

Bruce - Something I did a few years ago when restoring a K&O model outboard (see my Harbor for an example) was to have an auto body paint supplier color match the paint and have it loaded into a spray can. A bit expensive but if color match is a high priority and you need a lot of paint in the future, it's the way to go.

Agreed PP 👍 Primers, being mostly chalk dust or similar, are inert when all the solvent / carrier has thoroughly dried and evaporated.

Bruce: For a variety of colours, including 'true to life' for all sorts of organisations, you'll find it hard to beat 'LifeColor'.👍

Try a large auto supply store if there's one in your area. Dupli-Color automotive paint. Their primer as a base coat works very well.

No Halfords here rust-oleum yes in our big box lumber stores Home Depot, Loews, Auto parts stores it gets pricey. Krylon fusion here works on plastic but not to may colors. Rust-oleum is mostly Lacquer. so have to be picky about lacquer and enamel being mixed.

Ed (Figtree) seems to do all right with his tugs and Rust-Oleum.
(He's a very talented guy - he also plays the linoleum - with his feet!😮)

Yes Doug, totally forgot about Bruce being in the good old USA,🤓 but I would think that they have an equivalent motor spares shop that does rattle can paints.

Hi All,
Here are some more paint charts for your 'delight and edification'😁

Bruce: I think the original was more likely painted with silk matt than gloss.
Like any other ship I've ever been on.
IMHO Gloss paint on this sort of model tends to make them look like plastic toys😮🤔
I would go for silk matt Signal Red, or Flame or Fire Red would be kinda fitting😉

Hi Bruce, I use halfords acrylic primers for undercoats, then I use for what the boat needs, I do use Vallejo paints quite a lot, airbrushed of course,
but for such a big area as the dusseldorf, be like Martin and choose the colour Red you like, bottle, tin or rattle can.😊

The colour charts are very interesting Martin but do they compare the full range of reds, blues greens and yellows. These all seem to be rather greyish if you see what I mean. Perhaps I am colour blind🤔

I cannot promise to finish one project before starting another. I know, I tried.

I have used Tamiya acrylic sprays for my Dusseldorf. They do not do a colour that matches all of the pictures on the box etc. but I must admit. I don`t always follow the colour guides anyway. I colour things to what I think looks good. My crane is an item that does not follow the pictures in any way.😁

In my mind having paint hold up in water is the main thing in painting of the boat. I myself use spray can application but do it in a well ventilated area or out side as much out of the wind as you can

I use Humbrol Enamel paint and spray with an airbrush.

I'm looking at using ValleJo Premium RC Color paint for my Dusseldorf Fire Boat. ABS hull and deck, my understand is this is a great paint for plastics, They don't make a gloss paint you need to go over the paint with their water based polymer varnish, it is suppose to hold up to RC fuels, with a durable finish. but they say it might not be good for boats in the water. I could go over it with spar varnish but it is yellow.
what do you guys use on your boat hulls? Krylon has a rattle can for plastics that is pretty good. was thinking of using on hull and not on the upper deck. but color matching the red may be difficult.
