A good dose of engine cleaner ( Detergent type) cleans that wax off. Rinse Very Well and allow to dry naturally. To take the gloss off I use fine wire wool before washing.

Regardless of your glue choice, make sure you remove all trace of the wax flow coat from attachment points.
The epoxy resins used to make the hull are oxygen inhibited, to keep them receptive to subsequent layers. To remove tackiness from the last layer, an oxygen blocking wax coat is added. If this isn't removed, all adhesives will ultimately fail. A good sanding to remove the high gloss is all that's needed.

Hi,
The Gorilla brown glue is a polyurethane glue and is totally waterproof. (Immersible). Foams at the joint and get it on your hands it has to wear off. Suggest surgical gloves when using.

Hi mate, just think about a 'spirited' arrival at the dockside, a good thump could cause the damage!!!

Hi Jarvo,
Thanks for your reply, I had not considered the brittleness factor so I think I will do some experimenting with flexing. I intend to have deck beams and bulkheads so there shouldn't be very much flex but who knows.

paults,
Look at Gorilla Glues Website in USA Sure you can get in Canada. I don't know how good
Polyurethane Adhesives are with Fibreglass. Messy Stuff don't get it on your hands!
I use ZAP Epoxy although expensive it comes in reasonable pack sizes. Squeeze Bottles not tubes.
Most construction adhesives are water repellant but not waterproof that's why look at the TDS

Hi Scamp,
Thanks for your input, there are many different types of Gorilla glue here in Canada, they seem to have gone Gorilla crazy, which one have you been using?

Hi Ianh,
I was looking for an alternative to the two part epoxy due to the large quantities involved but many thanks for your input and I might yet fall back on the 24 hr epoxy.

Hi Paults
Welcome my only comment is be careful what you use. I would use a long setting old fashioned 24 Hr epoxy. But you have a greater range over there than I do in SA.
My advice is look for a technical data sheet (TDS) as you get claims of waterproof and then find out they are waterproof but cannot be submerged!

I have been using a variety of adhesives called Gorilla for all different materials on my RAF fire tender.
This adhesive is slow setting , so this allows you to position every thing in the position required. Then hold in place with fixing pegs or clips. Adhesive takes about 12 hours to cure.

Hi Paults, I have used many different types of glues, personally it comes down to 2 types, construction adhesive is a gap filler as well, but it is brittle, so not a lot of give if the hull flexs, epoxy is my favorite, not the fast set types, 24 hour Araldite is my go to. sets well, gap filling and slightly flexible, you do need a lot of clamps!!! fast set epoxy has low strength and is brittle, the faster set the worse it is. Hope this helps, Mark

Adhesive for wood to fiberglass hull

I will soon be installing the deck beam shelf around the inside of my Pilot Cutter fiberglass hull and I am considering using one of the various brands of construction adhesive. This product seems to stick with great strength to a wide range of materials and has the advantages of being a one part adhesive with a slow setting time witch of course aids in positioning of the material being joined. Can anyone see a downside to this idea?
All advise appreciated.
Regards,

Paul
