    ๐ŸŽฌ "Rescue Launch "
9 months ago by philcaretaker ( Commander)
    Flag
Grandad Graham was looking after his 7 year old grandson for the day, grandson Finley asked (several times) - he could help building a model boat. After he had gone home, Graham started to think about a boat he could help build. Graham had come across "HAkits" in a couple of blogs on the https://model-boats.com/ website, he then decided that their Rescue Launch would make a nice model for a 7 year old. The kit was duly ordered and arrived a few days later.

    Thanks Will,

Re the turns. The launch has a custom mixer built in to reduce the throttle on turns. The sharper the turn, the more the reduction. I didnโ€™t want it rolling over attempting to turn flat out.๐Ÿ˜‰

๐Ÿ“ท Look what followed me home ....

Tonight was our club's annual swap meet. I scored some parts and pieces. Missed a kit I wanted and ended up being given this boat (which fits right in with my collection of "misfit toys"). It hasn't seen water in years and needs some TLC. The person who gave it to me knew nothing about it. Does anyone on here recognize it? I'm sure it was a kit from somewhere. I'd love to find some info, so I know what it "should" look like.

    Rislinger,
As I am working on the boat, I have discovered that it is indeed a wood hulled boat. Making it what I believe to be a Midwest 986 kit built boat.
When it was given to me, I was told "the hull leaks". Over the years, somebody had filled it with that spray foam insulation stuff. So the first thing I had to do was remove all that icky stuff so I could see the inside of the hull. At that point, I discovered that there have been numerous attempts at sealing the "leak". There are layers of a rubbery sealant of some type, multiple different hard setting epoxies or something. I am now down to wood in all the place where I suspect the leaks are. I' will keep posting as I go forward.

Ron, yes it appears to be plastic. Somewhere along the line somebody put what seems to be spray foam insulation in the hull, so it is hard to see the hull from the inside.

It is a 47ft USCG Motor Lifeboat which replaced the 44Ft Lifeboat. If it is wood, it could by Midwest (http://www.flyhobbies.com/midwestcoastguardlifeboat.htm), a plastic hull could be ProBoat, and if it is fiberglass it could be http://coastguardmodels.com/. Great find.

Harry uses a helper to launch the paraglider once the skimmer approaches sufficient speed. This was the first time a successful flight was achieved and the weather was just right with little or no wind. The drag from the paraglider is high and Harry intends to put a larger motor to increase the power. Whilst the wind a water level was low research indicates that the wind strength is strongest at about 6 - 10ft above water and that is where the paraglider is flying.

Our pond is part of a city park, a very nice setting! The long skinny one is the one in my videos. It is used by scale boats, and general sailing. The larger one below it is recommended for fast electrics. Gas boats are not allowed.

That was his first time out with that boat. It was listed locally on Facebook Marketplace (He beat me to it by mere minutes ... sigh). Since that outing, he has taken some weight out of the boat, it sits higher in the water now.

Brian Clewes brought along a nice example of his scratch built Master Hand retired fishing boat, for a sail. When larger more powerful mechanised boats were introduced this type was abandoned. Many were rescued and turned into pleasure / racing type craft and that is what this model depicts. Not seen for some years but is ageing well. The static pics will be of interest to any modeller considering making a scale sailing ship of this type. I did film some video and will share this later when edited.

Nice calm night last night, so thought I'd go down an disturb the peace. Camera battery must have been going flat as the sound/picture sync was miles out, but you'll get the idea, (the sound is ahead of the picture by about 4 seconds) Might try for a better one when it's lighter and the battery is fully charged. YT also distorts a good video in the transfer for some reason (my HD camera anyhow)

Hi Rick, it's actually a tidal estuary (Orewa River) which doesn't look as good when the mud's in๐Ÿ˜ (arrow is where I was for perspective). Get some good pics of sunsets from there at times. There's a walk/cycleway round the entire estuary which is pretty nice. Star is my place, so quite handy for boating. I was running the airboat from beside the boat ramp.

The lake freighter was her first run & just needed a little ballast weight at the stern prop wasn't deep enough Boat belongs to a fellow club member .

๐ŸŽฌ Bionic Bill and Ben ready for Halloween

Bionic Bill and Ben ready for an outing on Halloween today ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ. Sadly the weather is so awful that they can't get on the lake as they would just be blown to the far side.

(Apologies for the shaky video, trying to operate the Tx while holding the camera)

That going to look good on the lake Graham- bit worried about Bill- he's looking a bit pale, probably in need of a bit of sun๐Ÿ˜
