About this boat

I bought this Nor Star Wave Rider on a local auction site as I fancied restoring it as it is a very interesting Classic Model Power Boat that is not seen on the water very often these days……..and I do like the shape.

The first picture shows it as I bought it, just after I made a new “orange box” stand for it .

Making a stand is one of the first things I do when restoring a model so I have something to stand it on when I am working on it, and it will later become its transport stand when I take it to the lake to run it.

The new blended chine stringers smartened up the underside of the hull - and encouraged me to cut some triangular strips out of obechie to use as strakes.

The number of strakes was decided and their positions marked on the underside before the paint was scraped off in lines wide enough to fit and glue them on.

Once prepped, the strakes were positioned and glued to the hull bottom.

A new rudder and water scoop were fitted to complete the underside up-grade.

The underside was the next area to gain some attention with a new prop supporting “skeg” made to support the prop-shaft (and look better!),

The chine stringers had a blunt end. At first I just tried to sand them to make them look better, but then I decided to refinish them to look nicer and blend-in better.

I guessed what size of motor to use…..and I happened to have this one available. Job done!

A new motor mounting platform with supports was cut and fitted into the hull to correctly align the new motor and shaft.

The water-cooled alloy motor mount was fitted with a new M5 Maxi Shaft prop-shaft and a Maxi Coupling to give the best available drive train.

These pictures of an original plan and a kit box were provided to the Classic Model Power Boat blog on this site.

Both make a very interesting reference as I had neither with this Wave Rider when I bought it.

The Wave Rider came with a stand that fitted the hull quite well, but was probably as old as the boat and I wanted to make a new one that had a base on it to make it more sturdy and able to hold any parts as I restore it , and later to carry any oddments to the lake.

An old brushed motor was connected to an equally old prop-shaft that showed some signs of wear and had a wiper board speed controller.

Ann intersting vintage stuff, but I wanted to refresh everything, so they were al removed to give a clean start to the refurb.
