Hi John
I have quite an old Portgarth and can tell you it definitely does not need a bowthruster.
I am not sure what the motors are, I think they came with the original kit. I have two MTronics speed controllers which are run through a home made mixer which gives me single stick control of speed and direction. You could of course use both sticks to give you independent control if you do not want to fit a mixer.
This is powered by a 12v 7ah sealed lead acid which gives plenty of power and some ballast!!
She will spin in her own length and will tow our club rescue dinghy ( with crew) with ease.
Regards Jack
