I have two of the small outboards (same as one shown bottom right)
One is same, single cylinder the other is a twin cylinder.both last run in 1970 I would guess.
Must get them out and see if they will run.

Looking for help, does anyone have a method for finishing balsa so it looks like metal.
For example metal ammunition lockers and radar parts on a PT boat.
Tried Search but could not find anything to really help. Appreciate any suggestions

Appreciate all your help, great deal of knowledge out there.
Surprised at how difficult to get info on these guns, considering how many have been in service around the world.
We had them on two of the ships I served on in the 1970's but i dont even have any photos of them, fun to fire them though !!!!

Hi,
Looking to build 4 x 20 mm Oerlikons in 1/24 scale for PT boat Thunderbolt gun system.
Have not had much luck with dimensioned drawings of the Oerlikon guns. Had some success wth the Thunderbolt mounting.
Does anyone have drawings of the 20mm Oerlikon guns.
Interested in any drawings or photos of the Thunderbird mounting as well.
Thanks in advance.

๐ PT Boat with Thunderbolt gun mount

Wondered if anyone has built a PT Boat with a Thunderbolt gun mounting on the stern?
I think this would really add to the model appeal.
Does anyone know any of the boat numbers that were fitted with this gun mount?
Thanks

Sorry I missed referring to the link in earlier posts and I meant 1:32
Been an interesting discussion, the wealth of knowledge in this club is amazing as is the quality of models.

๐ PT boats weathering

Appreciate the comments. My thought was minor damage, rough handling against wharfs, staining from polluted water ( fueling jetties), shrapnel splinters, towing damage, smoke stains from motors, guns or use of the smoke generator, etc.
Iโm pretty sure the uniforms would also be less than pristine.!!!
I agree that these boats were their homes and they would be proud of them, hence repairs and repainting, minor colour of different paints would probably be lost in camouflage patterns.
Thanks again

There are a lot of PT style boats made and can be seen on these web pages, generally these have pristine paint jobs which might be true as they came out of the factory but I think that during the war this is probably unlikely.
My question is has anyone ever made a model weathered and with some battle damage, I also think these need a โcrewโ at least on the helm.
Anyone got any thoughts on this?

๐ Simulated Cooling Water discharge
2 years ago by

I have been around boats all my life, cooling water is pumped by rotary pump so i wonder why flow isn't constant from the exhaust?
i assume this happens because the flow is low compared to the size of the exhaust pipe and water accumulates then flows, vessel movement and possibly non return flaps could cause this. I guess that this effect will not occur when scaled down to model size.
Probably the easiest way to simulate interrupted flow would be a piston pump or a rotary valve interrupting the flow(stopping or diverting flow), pump/valve speed could be varied with motor speed.
Just a thought!!!
