    US Coast Guard Utility Boat
1:16 Dumas USCG Utility boat 40-ft-class. I restored this old model from the 1970s. It's Dumas kit 1210. All-wood construction, runs beautifully.
    Saito Hercules (live steam)
I acquired this boat with a Saito T2DR twin steam plant installed. It had been stored in a garage for 20+ years, and was in decent shape - all except the steam plant. It needed a complete overhaul and restoration. It took around 3 months to work out the bugs, but now it's running very well. It's my first live steam boat, and I'm hooked!

If storage space is at a premium, and you lack a bathtub, here's a solution. Simply purchase an inexpensive inflatable boat. They can be found on Amazon and eBay for less than $40 USD, in a range of sizes. Inflate the boat, place it on a table or workbench, and fill with water. The flexible sides will allow you to run the boat without fear of harming the finish. Having it on a table makes it easy to work with your boat's ballasting, test radio, propulsion, steering, etc. When done, bail or pump out the water, deflate the boat, and store it away until needed.

It's not the physical size of the motor that determines the power requirements, but the efficiency and load. Every motor is different, and every installation is different. As to the type of battery needed, it depends on the particular application. More details about the boat in question would be helpful.

Great story! Did you retrieve the boat? Here's one of mine, lost at the bottom of Spreckels Lake in Golden Gate Park for over a month:

The page I sent the link for states that not all files are available online, and suggests you contact them.

Regarding Alabama, I took hundreds of photos of her a few years back. If you need detail shots, let me know.
