I went for cargo as well. Looked it up after to find that the Selandia was the first ship to be credited as fully powered by diesel. It was a cargo/passenger ship. I also found a reference to a US submarine partly powered by diesel in 1902. Interesting to see how the developments took place, but I can’t find a reference to a sailing ship being fitted. Any clues?

Great questions. Prompting me to know more about the subjects concerned. Did you know that the first measurement of longitude on a ship was on the Aurore in 1767? It was a French expedition under de Montmirail.

Just a thought on the flush deck question. Having got it wrong (again!) thought I would learn a bit more. Every day is a school day! It seems a chap working for the East India Company as their chief marine architect, Gabriel Snodgrass, in the 1770s picked up the idea from seeing Indian sailing vessels while in Bengal. He then applied it to his designs and the rest, as they say, is history!

Thanks a lot. Good thinking re a build log. Dad completed the hull and deck planking many years ago. He became I’ll and lost interest so it sat in his garage. After he passed away it came to me and I finally got round to restoring it. I’ve got one or two pics of it it’s original condition so I’ll put them on the site. Looking forward to some more sailing at Bourneville when the weather improves!

Thanks Doug. She does get a shift on doesn’t she! Battery ran out so the sails came in very handy! Yes, I’m hoping to get a few bits and pieces, nets etc. I want to name her but not too good at free hand sign writing! Would you suggest stencils or decals perhaps? Phil

Finished my Dad’s Billing Bent fishing boat. Here she is sailing on the Bourneville Boating Lake, Birmingham, UK, on 21 February 2023. I think he would have liked it.

Me again Roy. It has got raised sides so it’s probably the one you’re thinking of. I used it a couple of times last year when visiting my daughter in Colchester.

It’s in the seafront park on Marine Parade West. Just opposite Trafalgar Road. Not used very much nowadays though.

At great risk of being totally wrong regarding the latest prize draw question, isn’t Gypsy Moth 4 now in Guernsey? I thought it had been sold during the year? πŸ€”

Thankfully it was imported by the previous owner so not sure how much the duties were. Pretty expensive I should think!

Our much loved 1984 Honda Goldwing. Moved house so had to sell her last year because of a lack of parking space. Many happy years on the road and great memories though.

Confirmed by Colchester Borough Council Park Ranger. September 2021. Happy Sailing!

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the use of your model boat. You are welcome to use the boating lake in Castle Park to sail it when the lake is not in use by the swan boat hire. They usually operate in school holidays and at weekends between 11am and 4pm weather permitting.

    Kind regards
