    Back to the Dungeon ๐Ÿ˜Š
(I like my Dungeon, very quiet)
I started a new build, The Seguin.
This will be a scratch build.
I ordered plans from the Net.
I picked the Seguin as it seemed straight forward and was designed for Steam.
    The keel has been laid.
    The Frames installed.
    The sub deck installed.
The one by attached to the keel is to keep it from hogging.
The build will be delayed, so I can process firewood for this winter. (Last Pic)

    Hi Rick,
Yes, the plans are Midwest and they do mention steam as an option for propulsion.

I wouldn't mind making them out of a log, except the wood is Ash, not conducive to boat building.

    Started the decking.
I used 1/8x1/16th Basswood strips with black caulking strips between.
For adhesive, I used thin CA.
I am not entirely pleased with the look, will have to wait for completion for a final judgment.

    Hi Trev,
    Your deck is looking good.
For what it is worth personally I agree with ToraDog.
I tend to think working boats decks should have a Matt finish, although imho a Gloss base to seal things first then a Matt or Satin finish over the top.
If you are not sure take the time to do some experiments off the model to get a feel for what you are doing.
At the end of the day it is your build and it really depends on what you are trying to achieve.

    Cheers,
    Stephen.

    Good Point Tora,
I did not know that the planks were hand sawn.
Thanks for that info, they probably should have a slightly rough look.
I used Tung Oil on the Mt Washington; I was pleased with that finish.

I think your planking looks fine. You can not really judge you final product until you have one, and I think yours will be fine. Rmember that Sequin was built with a lot of hand sawn lumber. Runs of decking will not be perfect. What is? with some sanding of the planking to remove glue stains, a bit of stain, maybe soem steel wooling, she look great. I don't know if they sealed her deck with varnish, I kinda doubt it, but it will make for a nice look and good water-tightness. I think I would suggest a satin on the deck while using a gloss on the hull and house. You might even consider steel wool after the satin, to break down any sheen.
She is you build...if you don't like the result, you can always paint the deck๐Ÿ˜Š

    Thanks Mike,
To answer both yours and Nick's question,
the caulking material, I found on ebay. I like it because it is thin. It also has an adhesive side that helps hold it in place while the next plank is installed.
    It comes in different thicknesses.

That looks very promising on the uniform and straight front, plus you have good access to the edges both inside and outside. It is looking really good and only comes to life after sanding and varnishing, on the varnishing front opt for satin as opposed to gloss and mat, I promise you will not be disappointed. Decking complete. Applying gloss varnish to seal the planking, followed by satin varnish.
I was going to use Tung Oil as I did on the Mt. Washington, but I needed to fill the caulk lines. In hindsight I should have used wider caulk strips.

I was able to acquire a Saito T2DR Engine and B2F Boiler on eBay for a fraction of list. I would rather a gas fired boiler than alcohol as the gas boiler can be pressure regulated. I guess I could always convert it, but I will stick with the alcohol for now.

    Hi Gary
I do miss the water level gage. There does not seem to be an easy way to install on without drilling the boiler, which I prefer not to do.
I can and will install a pressure gage. They are available from Age of Sail in the States.
I also will install a whistle.
The Chinese boilers have the benefit of sight gages.

Hi Trev, I didn't realise that your last photo above was the steam engine running, so having just watched that and it runs quite well I have two questions, first is there a water level sight gauge? Plus there doesn't seem to be a boiler pressure gauge? Mind I do appreciate that this boiler design goes back a long way probably the seventies, a pity they never saw fit to update and modernize it to suit today's standards and safety. Regards, Gary.

    I agree Gary.
My preference is gas, controlled by a pressure-controlled regulator.
I am not terribly pleased with a set flame on the boiler, as once the vessel is underway, I can't adjust it. (I'm too Big to ride along)
I have been eyeing them for some time on Ebay. I don't think it would be a big deal to change over. For now, I will stick to the Alcohol.
I have a long way to go on the Seguin.
I shall be very interested in your progress on the Puffer. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Hi Trev, and always good to see a little more on the steam scene. Saito make some really nice steam engines and have a very good reputation, as in robust and reliable. I think I would be tempted to replace the spirit burner with a gas torch nozzle of the same diameter, with a gas cut-off valve between the torch and gas canister. This would make for an easier safer and more controllable setup, and you could take it a step further by fitting a boiler pressure-controlled gas valve, this will save you both water and gas, as when the pressure reaches the set pressure, it cuts the gas down to a pilot flame until the boiler pressure drops. Microcosm on eBay is the only supplier, and the bad news is the price has almost doubled over this last year. It is a P5-B steam-controlled gas regulator. Well, something to think about anyway. I will be very interested in your build and progress, and I am again working on my Clyde Puffer and will restart my blog shortly. Regards, Gary.

    Well done Trev,
That's a very nice looking plant, nothing wrong with a meths burner imho.
It would pay to do a hydraulic pressure test before running it, just to be sure there are no problems with the boiler.

    Cheers,
    Stephen.

When I built my Sequin in 1990 There was no E-Bay to buy a life boat for that model so I used the kit life boat & some masking tape for the cover .P/S that's a real nice looking life boat & you probably will not put cover over boat. I got my Sequin from Booths Hobby on Concession Street . I was on Strike for 3 months so had lots of time to get it built for 1991 Valentine's show at LimeRidge Mall
