I have shelved the Naxos for a bit and roped myself into airbrushing these stencils onto these tip camping cups as a wedding favor for my son's wedding on the September 7th...160 of them!
The things we do for our kids!!!!
Cannot wait till this part of the whole event is over.

Some fixes on the rails. They shorted me on piano wire, but luckily had some spares in my wood and metal stash box. The die-cut tabs on the pilot house will have to be filled and sanded. Not to mention the double interlocking diamond designs. Sheesh! The primer was done to expose them even more. Also, I might mention that there was no cradle supplied with the kit, not even a rudimentary one. So, will have to get going on that too. Let the filling and shaping begin...

    Well maybe itโ€™ll work outโ€ฆ
    ๐Ÿ˜‰

But, be aware this is just about everything that comes in the kit from China. There is a rudder, stuffing box, and a motor mount, but thatโ€™s it.
Going to take weeks to fit this gal out.

HI there Commodore! Truth be told I've always had a pet project on my wish list. And this is it, from the legendary prime-time TV cartoon "Jonny Quest." The Quest Research Vessel. Certainly a major refit that would require all the skills I have; what there is of them! Here's two pix...Not much to go on!

    ๐Ÿค”

We'll see! Back to the drawing board!

You have an opportunity to do many things with this boat. No one says you have to follow any specific plans. It just has to please you. If the bulwark is not good, put a railing instead. You could dump the entire superstructure and make it into trawler/yacht. Let your imagination go wild.

Hi Gang! Back from our 7202 mile road trip and truly happy and thankful that all went well despite the horrid driving these days...all over the country. We took our time heading west, dodged the wildfires and took a slow drive through glorious Yellowstone. After a wedding in Oregon we blasted home in 4 drive days of 844, 777, 757, and 622 miles. Yes, Mary and I are road warriors...or masochists! Take your pick.
    ๐Ÿ˜‚

So...once the car was unpacked, and the laundry done, and the fridge restocked, I jumped back into the Naxos.

I have installed the rail posts and fore guard rails. The fore guard rail plywood took a bunch of hot water warping and (as you may notice) flipping as the printed posts on the supplied plywood parts have no relation whatsoever to the die-cut post locations!!! I also had to carve a block for the bow as the plywood was impossible to round the corner. I know you folks will forgive me.
    ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‰

Good Lord what a mess! Paint will forgive these ills...I hope!
    But the work continues.

    More to follow!

I am finally just getting going on the "short kit" of the Naxos fishing boat from China. I call it "short" because there are no instructions (posted somewhere on the web) and only a minimal amount of parts, but the fiberglass hull is beautiful. And the laser cut pilot house and deck parts (what there is of them) are really really sweet. However, a huge amount of kit-bashing is in the offing on this one!

As a side note, on a personal level. I am heading on a cross-country trip for a few weeks and it is always my habit to leave a project undone so I have something to look forward to when I get back. Call it habit or superstition...it's just me.

BTW, this will be a fine looking vessel when complete. If it were my build I would heavily weather it. Fish boats are not showroom clean. They are worked hard & IMHO should reflect it for authenticity.

Morning Ronald! The train was too pricey this year for us so next year when we have to go to another wedding in Los Angeles weโ€™re going to use the train. My wife is a veteran of that cross-country mode of transportation. Truth be told I have a serious weakness for it myself! And you have seriously motivated me!

As usual with the Chinese, they stole the blueprint and produced a cheap kit
I know some excellent RC models based on the original plan

In my old rc flying days a short kit was plans and patterns with fiberglass odds and ends like spinners and wheel pants and maybe a nice canopy. They were always a test of wills. There were โ€œcuttersโ€ who would charge a hefty buck to do your ribs and bulkheads. Now with laser print/cutting things are a bit more in reach. Well, maybe not as โ€œin reachโ€ as many of us would like.

I hear you about the โ€œshort kitsโ€. Several years ago I bought a Chinese kit on eBay from who I thought was the supplier of a well done, all parts included, model of a Damen 804 Stan Launch. In spite of what I thought was diligent research since I knew there was a phony kit I ended up with the phony kit. Not only missing instructions but several major components for the wooden hull. Other parts, fittings, motor, etc looked like they grabbed a half handful of parts from their spare parts stash & included them in the kit.
Decided to start construction as a side project this spring mostly as an โ€œ I will make something out of this messโ€. Assembling what components there are is mostly by process of elimination. However I will make the damn thing work by scratch building a lot of it. The hull is about 75% complete & is really all I need.

About 90 minutes in...Hmmmmm, not sure about the interlocking "gingerbread" look, but will figure it out. Sanding and paint will hide it. I guess.

Absolutely Barry, I must admit that I'm a kit-bashing fiend!

Ronald! We're driving from CT to Oregon for a wedding and hitting a couple of National parks on the way. My wife and I do this type of sojourn once every 18 months or so. My youngest daughter lived in Oakland for 5 years so she and I made the trip about 5 times...even during Covid when I moved her backโ€ฆ Picture below. We are "Road Warriors" to say the least. Although this Oregon trip is a bit of a grind as I not thrilled with the family types out there and my wife won't fly! I lost that argument this time around.
    ๐Ÿ˜†
Last year we had to dodge the wild fires in Northern Cali and Oregon and I fear we might have to do the same this go-around based on this weeks news. However, last years detour took us to one of my favorite National Parks Mt. Lassen Volcanic National Park. I love it there, but was shocked by the fire damage everywhere. In central Cali the logging industry is exploding as we saw burnt trees piled 60 feet high and a quarter of a mile long. Astounding! However, still waiting for lumber prices to drop!
    ๐Ÿ˜‚
I will say this, I got my license in 1974 and I have never seen worse driving than what I am seeing now...nationwide. Makes no difference where, Idaho, Cali, Minnesota, Chicago, Kansas, Omaha, NYC, it sucks everywhere. So we are super attuned to going easy and letting the psychos go on their way.

I promise to report in every now and again. ๐Ÿ‘

That looks like a nice project. I believe you will actually enjoy the kit bashing required.
That is something it seems I have to do on any building project. I believe we all enjoy
doing a little of our own thing when building.
    Barry
