I was given this Storm Glass for my 76th birthday last month, and to be honest , I am not too sure what to make of it?

This storm glass came into use in the early 1700's when sailors attached it to the mast of their ships.

How is works remains a mystery, but it is believed that electromagnetic changes associated with weather patterns activate the crystals.

These changes produce different patterns in the crystals inside glass tube that can be interpreted to forecast weather conditions at sea.

Has anyone else ever heard of the Fitzroy Star Glass or have any idea if it actually works - or is it just a piece of "nautical nonsense" ?

    Bob

We are thinking that my Fitzroy Storm Glass still needs a little more time to "settle" before giving a reading that makes any sense.๐Ÿคฃ

Trying to match the crystal pattern that we can see (at the moment) to any of the reference drawings supplied on the leaflet that came with it is not an exact science.

The nearest comparison we can make with what we can see in the Fitzroy tube to any of the reference drawings is that we are currently experiencing SNOW. โ„๏ธ !!

......but looking out of the window (a time proven accurate way of seeing what the current weather situation is) shows no snow. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

At this moment in time, I am thinking that hanging some seaweed up outside my shed could be a better (more accurate) method of predicting the weather.

    Bob.

Anything labelled Nauticalia is suspect. They flooded the market with crap model yachts knocked together in China. They fool some otherwise intelligent people as well.

I have never heard of a Fitzroy storm glass ๐Ÿค”, but the best that I can suggest is to chuck your barometer away and put this in it's place ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜.. It does look interesting.

You will soon know with the changeable weather that we get in just one week.
    Sorry, Steve.๐Ÿ™„
