I don't often have more than one on the go at a time, I just line them up in readiness. there are five in waiting at the moment, and that doesn't include the one I hope to finish this week.

"I just line them up in readiness"
    I've tried that Nerys,
Then you suddenly get a flash (or flush?😮) of inspiration 💡 and tootle off to do it on number 2 or 5, and then go back to the 'main' event, number zero - maybe🙄
If that doesn't happen to you Nerys I can only admire your discipline👍

You should have met my Granny Mike,
She always said "I like a good jig about" when lively music came on the radio😁
Especially after an egg flip or two 😋

Most of us use rudder extensions, but separate rudders is a perfectly good idea. You seem to be doing well and making an excellent job of this.

Not sure that elastic thread is any good for the deadeyes. The purpose of the deadeye set up is to tension the shroud, it doesn't want to stretch.

Jacko. You should find both those books very useful, excellent illustrations and descriptions of the barges gear. Another book you would find useful would be, 'A Handbook of Sailing Barges' by barge skipper Fred Cooper and illustrated by John Chancellor, who owned and sailed the barge yacht 'Viper'. Pleased to hear you are researching the subject thoroughly.

    Jacko,
Wow, great images of the deck and equipment. 👍 I was just looking through my sailing barge books and the internet for deck photos. Your photos do the trick. I will have to get that book.

That's a very neat job you are making of the rigging Jacko, you are doing very well. She's beginning to look pretty good. Both mainsail and topsail are nicely proportioned, the mainsail in particular has a nice high peak and the topsail tack just nicely overlapping the mainsail. Carry on with the good work.

sails update

after looking at photos of real barges the sails a edged with rope so it begins,
1. mark the sail size on cotton
2.cut a length of 1mm nylon cord longer than required
3.sew with a zig-zag stitch very carefully keeping nylon cord in line with mark (on sail )
4. using a very sharp cutting wheel cut just outside the zig-zag stitching

this is just the first attempt will be better when i get back from hoils

If using a laid up rope then one stitches into the lay and bear in mind that the roping is traditionally on the port side of the sail.

Well done to reach the finish line, I think you have made an excellent job of her, amazing attention to detail, but I'm afraid you have made one major mistake. You have the sprit on the wrong side of the mainsail. The sprit is hung by the standing lift on the starboard side of the mast (and sail), The mainsail is a good shape with a nice high peak but the headrope should go around the sprit end. (In a real barge, the whole weight of the sprit is taken by the headrope of the mainsail. Sorry, I'm not criticizing, just pointing out a couple of mistakes easily made if you are not properly conversant with a full size barge.

    All the best, Nerys
